A steering box rebuild is not as hard as you might imagine....

Its a lot easier if you have an older box to scrap to make a set of seal/bearing drifts out of.

Wheres your box leaking from If its leaking from the sector shaft output (where the pitman arm bolts on) and depending how much damage has been done to what parts you may even get away without pulling the box out or to pieces.

    Best of luck

Blknight: Genius, I know where there are four old rangies rotting away at a wrecking yard, I'll get one (the box) and practice and maybe find some usable bits. The leak appears to be coming from the big nut, but I'm as yet unsure. I've driven maybe 30 ks today and its now not leaking, (the filler tank is full), it just comes and goes, this started years ago and leaked for a few months then stopped for maybe two years....but it has to be fixed...

BTW the brakes no longer leak, thanks.

I need one little rubber boot and they want $145 for it, haha.

But it looks like I'm going to do the lot like it or otherwise.

Something wrong here. I just had a Volvo master cylinder sleeved with stainless steel and new everything for $125. Master Cylinder Exchange Service, Wynnum.

Hi John, Haven't seen you for ages, that was me, thanks for the offer, may pinch it from you for the steering box fix i have to do, catch you soon.

Brian: have a look back a page or two where i have photos of the operation, the first pic is what I got for $72 from a local supplier in Lismore, lots of rubbers, but not the tank. The LR dealer in Casino did say $145 inc GST for the same 'genuine' parts.

Unbelievable; so much $$$ for so little. All of that ex manufacturer couldn't be more than about 50 cents.

Just to add to this thread.

I just bought a STC2901 kit which is a master cylinder rebuild kit for a 94 non ABS Disco (MA).
Cost quoted was min $125 max $250 (neither genuine quotes).
I only actually need the tank to cylinder rubbers which you could buy for for $40 for the pair.

I ordered it from Paddock's UK for $96.53 delivered which also included
    8 sway bar rubbers
    2 RTC3511 hub oil seals
    1 swivel seal

Not a bad price I reckon

    Need a Better Price !!!

I am also after the same 2 rubber mounting boots that the Brake Reservior sits on (LR Disco '96 ABS).

After checking an LR parts dealer and another LR parts retailer - they can only sell me the entire Reservior Kit at $145 - or also comes with the Master Cylinder overhaul kit at $500+ !!!

I have a tiny leak because (1) of the (2) rubber grommets looks old/hardened - has a very slight leak. I don't need a complete overhaul.
There's nothing wrong with any other parts.

This is once again LR ransom money.
Recent purchase of much larger rubber bushes on my sway bar only cost me $1 each. So even if I paid $10 for each I wouldnt care - but $145-$500 has to be blackmail.

Try a generic brake specialist. The overhaul kit is certainly not exclusive to Landrover - and that is where the original poster got his.
