    Help!

    G'day all,
I've just joined these forums, and have just bought my first land rover - a 97 Disco TDi with 140,000kms. Recently i've had it checked out by the local dealer here in Newcatle and to my shock have found that there is over $6k of things that need fixing!! The car only cost $11k!

Due to my limited income as a student, I'm wondering if you guys coudl help by suggesting what is important and in need of attention, and what could be left. The car curently is under the statutory 3 month warrenty, but I'm unsure as to what woudl normally be covered under this type of warente I've attached the most recent quote that was provided to me.

Also, if anyone knows of a good/reputable mechanic in Newcastle that may be able to help, that woudl be great.

    Cheers guys!

    -Mike

P.S. On visual inspection, the engine, hoses and gearboxes seem in micky mouse condition.....a slight oil leak comming from the main gearbox was all I could locate. Also, the timing kit I woudl have thought woudl have been replaced around the 100,000km mark...

flamin heck! i think alto just wants money!! there are a couple of things that ''could'' cause issues and they are the tail shaft coupling, power steering hoses and the vacume pump. apart from that most the seals that need replacing can be done by any compatent mechanic.
just depends how quickly they are leaking??

ide deffinatly find another mechanic to have a second look at her.

if you were to buy seals dont buy from land rover, use tr spares, karcraft or british 4x4 some one like that.
if you know the seal sizes any good bearing shop will stock them, eg hub seals and 60,80,10mm lr price bout $25ea, bearing shop $9!

as for the 3month warenty, ANY oil leak should be fixed!!! and if you can see cracks in the tail shaft coupling it to should be replaced!

    cheers phil.

As it's under the three month warranty - I'd take it back ASAP and either get them to fix EVERYTHING or get your money back.

I would go for the latter.

Suggest next time - before you buy - have somebody who knows - inspect it for you.

    Gday Mike
Is this quote to get the car registered and transfered into your name or is it already registered in your name? If this is just a warranty inspection then the statutory warranty should cover any issues that make the car unroadworthy/undrivable. Dealers are bound to sell a car in roadworthy condition.

Aside from that how bad are the leaks, slow landy leaks can be lived with for a long time. The tailshaft coupling costs about $90 from Karcraft and is and easy DIY. I would get a second opinion from a local reputable workshop who love rovers..that quote REEKS of a rip off to me. There should be some aulroans up there who can help.

Others will be of more assistance than I...hope it all goes well..but dont forget your warranty, dealers often dont want to honour them and try to talk their way out of it.

Most of those are relatively minor, and a large percentage you could do yourself. A lot of them you could live with too. Swivel seals? Shouldn't be an issue the swivels have grease in them now.

Having said that, the warranty should cover most of them anyway.

that just reeks of rip off merchantism to me... at opening guesses half of that stuff is going to get the "fix by cleaning" routine...

    for starters...

unless the rear main seal hes talking about is the engine rear main(in which case why is it listed with the trasnfer case repairs) cut his labour hours in half for everything and you might be getting close to what it actually takes to do all that repair work....

Going off my handy dandy RAEME man hours book for the engine repairs hes quoted you the total time to replace each individual item. Nice way to make money when you work out that to get to some of them you have to dismantle the other parts hes replacing anyway.... can you say double dipping...

and some of those part prices.... did you ask for the platnium coated gold cast ones?

IMHO your right about the timing belt issue but check the service history... If you bought it out of a car yard ALL the leaks should have been sorted prior to sale..

If your handy with a spanner buy the RAVE cdrom and have a crack yourself, the only thing thats likely to trip you up is the timing belt IF it actually needs doing.

Mate the times he's quoted are book times, the actuel time to do the jobs are a lot shorter, but you allways pay the book time,

The last time I looked at EMEI's those times were even longer than Land Rover book times

But if you can read and have a few spanners 99% of whats on that list you can do for a fraction of the parts cost let alone the labour charges.

But as others have said if its still under warrenty take it back with that list an tell em to fix it, and dont take no for an answer

shame your so far away I hire my workshop out would have suited you down to the ground

I see where your coming from but I wasnt quoting the EMEI's if you go by them it takes 1 man hour to change a tyre and I dont mean get the rubber off the rim.

ALTC's VTW (Violence and Terrorism Wing AKA vehicle technology wing) has a ready recknor that lists most of the jobs we do as we dont do half the paperwork and the parts for the job are almost always on hand. Its essentially the "perfect time" for doing something. I'm a horder so I grabbed a copy...

It also helps that most of the time, engines and boxes are already out of the vehicle.

IF those are the book times I cant wait to get qualed, quit the ADF open a garage and charge people for how long it should take VS what it does take...

I can just see the day I walk in the pearly gates to be celebrated as the oldest man ever, only to have to correct them cause they added the hours I charged the customers instead of how long I actually lived.

Too little time too many thoughts/questions:

I presume that the hand written numbers on the "estimate" are the priorities?

A pragmatic LR specialist will help in this regard...If no one has a suggestion for someone local then a trip to Sydney might be worth while.

Did the Disco come with a service record?

Buy a set of Sidchromes. Also buy a RAVE manual and an Electronic Parts Catalogue from this site and a lot of this can be dealt with gradually.

    Ah the famous Lawyer Joke:

Give "All 4x4 spares" in McDougle Street Kotara a go. They have given me a part and told me to pay for it later if I wanted it, or return it if was no good. They overhauled the gearbox in my ex 110 county, and did a few services, I've always been happy with there work, and done at a resonable price.
