i have seen a few nissans that were 24v... you see a fair bit of stuff for them go thru on ebay....
Gday
A few months ago I picked up a Nissan Cabstar ED33 and 5 speed gearbox mated to a Series 2a transfercase from a aulro member - slunnie. I have been in the process of trying to get it going and so far have had it running but the starter motor is giving me grief. I pulled the starter off and took it into a local auto elec and we worked out that the solenoid was buggered. The thing we both can't work out is if the starter is 12volts or 24volts. The book the auto elec has shows that the starter should be 24volts. Slunnie and the auto elec reckon that the electrics were 12volts. I am wondering if there are any other aulroians out there that may know if these engines are a 24volt or 12volt system.

Easy way to test is to, remove from car, connect it to 12v and run it whist measuring the amps drawn - if the amps are excessive and/or it runs slow that would tend to suggest it's 24v. If the amps are normal (sorry don't know what normal would be but the auto E guy should know) it's 12 v
...............test 12v first.
If the amps are high on 12v - then run a QUICK test on 24v and test the amps again - the amps should be normal - if they are not the motor is faulty.
Hi Rich
I Pulled a ed 33 out of a series 3 land rover i bought and it was 24 volt.It also hade a cabstar 5 speed.

Gday all,
I think someone has been playing with the electrics on this engine. If I fit this engine to my SWB I really don't want to run 24v. It has a Ford Falcon Bosch 12v alternator on it and I would presume then the glow plugs are 12v. There is no fuel cut stepper motor so I will just run a choke cable to kill the fuel to the engine.
Does anyone know where I can get the starter rebuilt and rewound to suit 12volt?
I had an ED33 powered SIII with the Nissan 5sp box. Was all 24V

Gday Richard.
Its strange. The motor definately was starting on 12v, not 24v when I had it. I think the motor is also an ED30 if it makes any difference. It sounds like if its running a Falcon alternator that it has been changed over from 24v to 12v.
Cheers

Good to see someone has actually got a 5 speed conversion mated to a series transfer. I have been trying for months now to find if this can still be done and have heard lots of stories about the guy who a friend knows had it done.... Can you people help me with solid details of what and how to do this? I have a SIII with a Holden 6 at the moment all working with the standard 4 speed box and a high speed transfer conversion but it still revs too high at highway speeds. Aside from the fact that the LR box has disintergrated again, I would dearly love to get a 5 speed fitted and hopefully make it last a little longer than the weak LR 4 speed.
Any help or suggestions are appreciated.
It was marks 4wds in dandenong victoria that did the conversion i dont know if he still does them

Hi John / All
I dont think this conversion is made any longer. I picked mine up from the Forsale section on this site. A few people seem to run this combo.
The gearbox is very similar to the 5 speed gearbox that was used in the MQ Nissan Patrol. The only difference I think is the input shaft is shorter and the first gear is a granny gear of about 6:1 ratio, which is good for pulling heavy trailers, rock crawling and descending down hills.
Dellow automotive sell the 5 speed cabstar gearbox as well as engine adaptor plates to suit a variety of engines. I am planning on fitting a commodore v6 into my series 2. I do remember that there was a kit for fitting a Holden red motor available. Not sure who made this.
A fella called Colin from the Vic land rover club has a series 3 SWB with a 5.0litre holden V8 and the 5 speed. I spoke to him a few months back about the conversion and he liked it except he said he has always had trouble with a loud gear whirring noise from the transfer case. He thinks its a casting issue from day one.
If you want to have a chat on the telephone about this kit send me a private message with your phone number and I'll give you a call.
Good luck
Richard
