Convert RR+Disco Wheel Bearings to Oil Lubed?

i have just replaced my rear axles with maxidrives (coz I broke the original) and it was recommended that I change to oiled wheel bearings. It's a great idea and the easy bit is getting the seals out. But the problem started when i ended up with diff oil weeping past the hub seal onto the brake rotor. I took it apart again and saw that after 380,000km the hub seals had worn a groove into the stub axle. I removed the stub axles and made a very crude lathe setup with my bench drill and filed away some of the stub axle. Then put it all back together. This worked ok on one side but the other still weped oil.

I had heard about 'speedi sleeve'. It's a thin steel collar that you press onto a worn shaft and it puts a new surface onto the shaft for the seal to slip against. They come in all different diameters and two widths (9.4mm and 20mm) - the rear hubs need a 60mm diameter kit. I installed them last night so here's hoping for no more oil leaks past the hub seal. They were $50 each from Bearing Wholesalers in Melbourne.

Just to clarify, I believe Rick meant that the RTC351 is still a currently available seal.

Not that it is used by rover in current defenders.

Because rover use a different seal now, does not mean it seals oil, water or dust better than the RTC351 used in the past when the bearings were oil lubricated.

I think there're some FTC4785 seals on the shelf,
I may try to open one and see how's the seal inside...

Then ring another dealer as planned...

that seal (FTC4785) doesn't have any springs to energise it Michele. It won't work as an oil seal (or keep water out, for that matter).

New stub axles were quoted $145 +gst (each) and I never bothered to get a genuine price.

One can replace the bearings but they are not cheap and you will need a bloody big press.

I'm now convinced that I should convert both the front and rear hubs to oil feed on a Defender, but still have a few questions.

Also from the diag, (7) refers to "inner and outer hub seals." Are both these seals replaced by a single RTC3511 oil seal?
There is no mention of replacing the seal on the spherical housing, so is it ok as is?

For the REAR hubs,

1. is there an "axle shaft seal" (similar to 8 on the diag) to be removed,
2. do I remove the "inner hub oil seal" (as per Defender Manual Sect51 p41), and
3. replace the "outer hub oil seal" with the RTC5311 oil seal?
