    Intercoolers cleaning

I Just cleaned mine (Disco 200TDI) and it made no difference. The vehicle has done 308,000 k's and the intercooler has never been cleaned. It runs and pulls a load as good as it ever has.
I'll wait for a hot day before I say I have wasted my time though.

    Cheers

I've cleaned mine a few times in the last 125,000km (about to clock 200,000km) and the bum dyno couldn't feel any difference, nor did my speeds over my test hills change, and I have three dud valve stem seals (they've lifted up off the valve guide bosses).

well i cleaned my intercooler about 2 weeks ago i used prepsol i was amased at the gunk that came out of it

the main change was when the motor was cold it responded quicker and didnt feel dead till the temp cauge moved to the normal position and also on a hill i drive every day instead of it losing speed it now holds the speed i hit it at
oh and after i cleaned it i used my electric leaf blower to remove the fumes it worked a treat

also correct me if im wrong as the intercooler is in line with the air intake any obstruction will choke the motor so if you have a dirty core it will restrict the air flow so id say just clean it and judge for your self

At the end of the day, It's just good maintenance, you don't change your oil and expect a difference or run the grease gun around and likewise.
If stuff gets in it (mainly oil) clean it!
Peace of mind in knowlege thats it's performing correctly or to it's potential.

    Hi John
Ive done mine, pig of a job(Disco2,Defenders are much easier).
You need the Rave CD workshop manual(available in Markets,a must have) for instructions. You can shortcut a couple of steps,I left the radiator intact, just moved it onto the fan, there is just enough room to get the intercooler out.
Mine wasnt too bad internally, but externally was quite bad despite regular air blasting and washing with the hose.Mud from Harvey and insects the main problem.

I should have taken the chance when I had some front end work don on my car 6 month ago. the wife had a minor bingle and i took the chance to remove the radiator and get it serviced.

If I had thought about it I would have done same to intercooler. Bugger

as already stated, Acetone - but I do it first thing in the morning, blow out any residue with compressed air and leave in the sun to dry for a couple of hours.

Is it possible to do without taking out?

Providing you flush it well and get rid of all residue.

No... You'll get a large build up of cleaning solution in the bottom. On top of that, you'll not be able to actually flush all the crud out.
