    Unusual Problem!!!!

    I have an unusual problem....
Today I went to rotate my wheels i.e. front to back to even up tread wear and I found the wheels would not seperate from the hubs when the wheel nuts were undone!! Even with a belt to the inside of the rim (with a block of wood to protect the alloy) failed to shift em...
I have soaked the studs and the hub in WD 40 and at the risk of causing damage have stopped the hammer action!!!
My question is this......Are there any tricks to loosening the wheels from the hub????
Short of going for a drive with loose wheel nuts (Dangerous and possibly damaging) I am at a loss.......

    Cheers,

    Johnsy

Persist in trying to get the wheels off without damaging the alloys.
What you need to do is to grease the hub thingy!! The Rave cd has a description of how to rotate wheels and it mentions this. There are not any pictures of what this 'hub' area to grease so I imagine its the round piece where the nut goes for the hub. It is a very tight fit into the alloy wheels and it is this part which holds the wheel in position before you replace the wheel nuts.

Someone else may have a picture on here.

A most unusual problem, I would suggest leaving the wheel nuts very loose and dropping the vehicle gently to the ground, that should crack the jamming on the studs. Possibly driving the vehicle a metre or 2 may help.
Someone else may have experienced this problem with better advice?

Quite common with alloy rims on LRs. Loosen the nuts (not a lot) and drive around a little bit - it shouldn't need much, maybe around the block..

Before refitting, lightly lube the hub (where it sits within the wheel) with anti-seize.

    Hi Johnsy.
The Disco2 wheel relys on the hub not the studs to centralize it in place, the nuts just stop the wheel falling off.You will find its pinching up on the hub not the studs.Unfortunately those centrecaps dont come off from the outside without damaging them freventing a squirt of CRC.
A good kick with your heel should be enough to free the wheel.

The wheel is centralised onto the hub by a centre ring which is part of the hub. The fit between the flange and the centre hole in the rim is very tight, and I guess it has to be very tight otherwise you would never get a balanced wheel assembly. The wheel nuts don't centralise at all.

Id try loosening the wheel nuts and drive forward a little bit and then hit the brakes hard. Then do it again in reverse. This may unlock it a little. Also, when you remove/refit the wheel, you need to keep it fairly aligned otherwise it can jam also. Then its a matter of wiggling it off slowly.

You'll also probably want to lubricate the hub centre before refitting the wheel.
    Cheers

we have this problem every day at work with holdens with alloys and the trick is to belt them with a rubber mallot and keep on rotating the wheel every now and then so you are hitting in a different spot

i would,nt drive with loose wheel nuts apart from being very dangerous and if something happened id hate to explain what you were doing to the police
it can damage your rims but thats your call

If your not keen on driving with the nuts loose grab the wifes hair drier in lieu of your hot air gun a jack and a rubber mallet

crack the nuts off, jack the vehicle up, heat up the rim near the studs with the hot airgun/hiar drier or park the vehicle with the wheel in question in the sun, back the nuts off all but the last 3 or 4 turns and apply hate to the inside of the rim from under the vehicle with the rubber mallet. It will help to rotate the wheel as you go...

Dont be subtle with the rubber mallet, think of the tyre as some ungrateful toyota driver who bags landrovers AFTER you've pulled him out of a self made mess using your recovery gear then drives off without offering to help clean up. The rest should come naturaly.

    Unusual Problem

    Thanks for the quick replies!!!!
I am the king of applying HATE in a concentrated form!!! I have a heat gun and will give it a go tomorrow.
It is very strange, but Landrover (AKA The Evil Ones) were *supposed* to have checked disks and pads at the last service in June....Wonder how they did it without removing the wheels???
There was Fraser Island sand evident when I took the nuts off and that was 12mths ago, so it appears the wheels haven't been off since before then when I rotated the tyres at 20000km.
Once again thanks for the advice...much appreciated!

    Johnsy
