    td5 Fuel leak take 2

Ok further to my original post yesterday and today, i seem to have the dreaded fuel leak from the hoses on top of the fuel tank. It has had the recall done in late 2004.
I have owned the Disco for around 3 months now. I bought it from a guy in Nth NSW and I am the 3rd owner now. It is out of warranty too.

I have searched all the threads on the leaks and it seems the recall has been done incorrectly in some cases. Maybe mine is one of them. I am going to remove the cover above the fuel tank and have a squizz to see if it is definately the problem of chaffing before yelling at someone on the phone.

What i am trying to find out is where the hoses should be if they have been re-routed ?? that way if it hasn't been done properly i can get on the phone and look at getting it done by LR properly.

Also i was starting to have doubts about the LR. I like to get in and drive it not worry about what is going to go wrong next. I have had it for 3 months and already had the Oil in the ECU. It cost me 500 skins to get a new harness and the oil cleaned out. Now the fuel tank leak. What is next ???
I plan to do about 6 months touring next year up the top end around to Perth so i want to make sure i have sorted everything out before then.
I love the LR. It has so much character and i love driving it. I was only thinking about looking into the BD chip and intercooler and maybe a new straight through exhaust sytem yesterday for towing loads and a bit more power for on road and off road. Now the fuel tank problem and i am thinking about selling. However i have read a heap of posts tonight on the fuel leaks and of course there is other posts mixed in there when doing the searches. They have changed my outlook a bit. I love the LR which is why i bought it in the first place. I had just come back from Sth Ballina for the weekend so i should be glad the leak didn't happen a couple of hours down the road from home. I just hope their isn't too many more problems around the corner.

On that note, any of the Brisbane guys know of any good LR mechanics in the Ipswich area. It seems that the guy at Blue Ribbon might be my closest option at this stage. However they were going to be a lot more expensive for the oil in the ECU fix than Techno British. I have taken it to Techno British a couple of times now in Moorooka but it causes a huge hassle with having to drive in there and back with the kids and two cars.

There was a guy in Ipswich out the back gate of Amberley who used to do RR and older Disco's but he has stopped that now. Know of anyone else local who can help with the newer stuff ??

This chafing problem is a pain, as when the new hose set is fitted, they have to be routed in such a way as to prevent it happening again. Last one I did I actually left the hoses out of their little holders, as these clips hold the hose hard against the chassis rail, and cause the same problem again later.
A few strategically placed zip ties and a small cover made from a piece of 3/8" fuel hose as a precaution will ensure it wont re occur.

    Hope all goes well.

After having the recall done on mine, 1 hose came unclipped at the tank and pumped fuel everywhere - luckily when trying to start it one morning. But it was only a few days after the work was done, not 3 or more months later, so its probably not your problem.

Just discovered a fuel leak on my '99 D2 TD5 and after a call to my local LR dealer, apparently there was never a recall on the '99 D2 So it's hand in the pocket time for me I suppose to fix the damned thing. Appears fuel is coming out of the top of the tank somewhere and dripping down either side of the tank onto the chassis rails

Hope it's not too expensive, anyone care to hazzard a guess at possible repais cost?

    Aye, Mick

The recall only affected Discos from 2001 to 2004 so your leak might not be the from the same source.
If it is the same, the new pipe is only about $20. Labour is the killer as the tank is supposed to come out to fit it.

Just back from the mechanics, turns out it might be the seal round the top of the tank....where all the pipes come out. Hopefully an easy fix but will see.

Well got the Disco transported to Southside in Brisbane. Lucky my wife had RACQ so was free. Otherwise it was going to cost me $120. It got dropped in on Thursday. Southside was waiting on the go ahead from LR aust. So no Disco over the weekend. Ring today and they started to dismantle to find out if it was the same problem that occurs in the recall. Low and behold it was the same problem as before even though mine had already had the recall done. LR Aust is going to pay for the repair. However i have to go and pick it up. So i have to stuff the whole family around and drive into the city to get it and then drive home with two vehicles. It will only take us around an hour to get in however it will be peak hour traffic on the way home. I know i should be thankful that i am getting it fixed however. My wife had to catch trains all weekend instead of having a car. I had to take the wifes car to work today and tomorrow. So she is stuck at home with the kids for two days as well. Also the fuel for both vehicles to go in and pick it up and the large amount of confidence lost in my Disco's reliability.... i would hate to think how LR Aust would be if i was out bush somewhere or nowhere near a LR Dealer like some of you other guys and gals. They wouldn't budge when i said that they should transport the vehicle as it was the same problem as before. One of the guys at Southside had the hide to say that it was 'two years since it was done' like i should be grateful. He was implying that if there is a fault which had been supposedly fixed there is a time limit where it then becomes my problem....

    Mick,
make sure you get a new nut as well as the seal.
The nut goes over the fuel pump and costs peanuts.

Mine did the same thing put in a new seal which seals the fuel pump then a nut holds the fuel pump in.

Mine leaked again untill we fitted a new nut and seal.

    No problems since.

Its a easy job to tear up the carpet in the back undo the 4 screws in the cover and replace the seal and nut. It says you need a speacial tool in the rave CD to do up the nut put a pin punch will do it. Take care as the pump is plastic.

    Cheers
