    Spolight mounting on 03 td5

Hi all, i am looking at putting a couple of spotties on my D2 or is it a realisic and viable option to upgrade the existing high beam globes to something comparable with a couple of extra spotties ???? and is that a cheaper or more expensive way of doing things. I haven't got a bullbar or nudge bar and if i did i would look at the LR poly nudge bar. So at this stage i don't have any obvious mounting points. I don't really want to put them on the roof as i will have to either put a full roof rack on attached semi permanent or put them on my roof rack bars which only go on if i need to carry something. So any thoughts ?? i don't really want to drill holes in the plastic bumper. Will look pretty tacky.

I would have to look at the cost of spotties, mounting points plus wiring and switch vs upgrade existing lights. Of course if the benefits of putting on the poly nudge bar with a couple of lightforce spotties far outweighs the light upgrade then........ making the vehicle a lot safer for the wife and kids for the upcoming touring factor might come into play.

What about a Headlamp Wiring upgrade....like from ARB or IPF.....[cost = $130 approx] and then putting in 130/90 Watt Hi/Lo Globes [aprrox $50] .....BUT DO NOT USE THESE HIGH WATTAGE GLOBES WITH PLASTIC LENSES OR BODIES! - you'll get UV degradation and/or heat damage!

You'll be amazed at difference they make - especially on Low Beam!

Before I installed a b/bar, I made up a bracket to mount behind the grill using existing bolts. It req'd removing 2 small sections of the lip at the bottom of the grill to allow the tabs to poke through.
I also use +50 globes in the high beam.

I've found, that often the dramas with headlamps is minor things. Off the showroom floor they're great, but over time they get the niggling issues. Check your aim for starters, or take it to your nearest repair crew that have an aiming board or a headlamp aimer. Similarly, check your voltage drops to the back of your headlamps. I find on most vehicles manufacturers love to put relays on the positive side and neglet the negative & they end up with voltage drops there. I'd also advise you not to mount your spotties on the roof. It's technically not allowed by ADRs.

Be very careful with headlight bulb upgrads in an 03 Disco as the poly carb fronts will not like to much heat and could be damaged.

Have a look at the Bearmach UK website as I think they do a small tubular bracket that fits through the grill. This should give you an idea at the least, there was also a LR part for this mounting as well from memory.

As for lights - though a bit more than others in cost - the Hella Rallye FF 4000 Compact are very good. I find they are as good as a friends Rallye 4000 standard ones and they're a smaller light.

Wiring the spoties in is simple, its a reasonably easy DIY.

There are previous threads which detail the regulations for fitting of long range driving lights or "additional headlights" as the Dept. of Transport refers to them. Also, roof mounted spotlights are now permitted to be installed. Previously all such installations were illegal. However, their use is a grey area. See the same threads for the D.o.T,s opinion. Search for Hella 1507 and you will find the threads. There is a photo on one of these threads of a Range Rover with NT plates with two Hella searchlights mounted high on the bullbar. According to the D.o.T. this is an illegal installation as they can be seen from the driver's seat and thus obscure the driver's vision. In Qld., a fine and loss of points, and, if the copper/inspector has the s---s maybe make you remove them before moving the vehicle.

I have a neat and tidy set up on '99 D2. It uses the Unibar which sits behind the number plate. I did not feel the need to go and spend thousands on a full bullbar so I went for this. It holds two Cibie Oscars perfectly without a hint of vibration and looks good. The Unibar is under $100 so its cheap and I know that a roo will take out the whole front of the car if struck. At this stage I do not travel in the areas where this may occur. I have pics somewhere with what it looks like.

    Cheers.

I will find out in a few months when I travel to Brisbane... From what I recall, according to ADRs you have to be able to see the ground 11 metres in front of the vehicle. The high seating position and short bonnet of the Classic Rangie mean that I can do that even with those lights on there.

Given the amount of wildlife prevalent in central Australia and the long distances involved in getting just about anywhere, I will keep the lights and take my chances.

Yeah if you have some piccies of the lights that would be great. I haven't seen the unibar so if you have piccies of that as well that would be awesome.

On page10 of the Qld. Transport publication "Modifications" is the following paragraph, verbatim- "Driving lights/brackets must not protrude forward from the front face of any bumper or above the top of any bullbar". This text is accompanied by an illustration showing items "Not approved".
