    engineering approval ??

As per one of my previous posts. I am looking at fitting spotties on my D2 03 TD5. I was looking at the poly LR bar mainly for asthetics and mounting UHF and spotties. After Johnsy's advice i won't be now looking for the poly LR bar. Pity as i like the square look. I also don't want to hide the lights and the grill so as you can guess i am not really after frontal protection. The front of the 03 Disco is one of the main attractions for me. Getting hot and sweaty now....

I am a Aircraft Structural Fitter (Aircraft Sheety) so would like to manufacture my own custom bar. However with the airbags in the Disco i guess you would need Engineering approval to fit. Has anyone had experience with this ??

I might have to wait till i make the move back to Perth next year and look at giving the Missus the Disco and i could get a shorty that i could play with. Always have liked the look of them.

I'm pretty sure a bullbar does not require engineering approval.

All the bar makers, and some car manufacturers mak comment about the bars being ADR compliant for use with airbags, so maybe the bars need to have a controlled crumple rate or similar to stop the air bags going off if you hit something hardbut not full-blown accident hard.

I think i should have said. What do you need to put a custom bar on made by me, and still have the insurance cover etc with the Airbag situation. I see that in the owners manual and the sticker under the bonnet that you have to have an approved bullbar or nudge bar fitted. I am guessing this is to ensure that the Airbags still go off when needed. Anyone have any experience in this ???

Ah huh, was typing as you posted Brian......

    Tonto,
Look up the queensland transport website, they have a blurb about vehicle modifications, basically with a bullbar for vehicles with air bags the bull bar must be certified by either the vehicle manufacturer or the bull bar manufacturer. (sorry I haven't figued out how to put a link to the website)

    Cheers Mick.

Pitty you cant get a hold of the crush cans of a ARB bar. Last time I heard they require a serial number of the existing bar before they willl sell you them.
