    Not so for the addition of the springbrakes, adding a second set of disc calipers behind the first ones would allow the use of unimog style spring brakes mounted behind the axle with surprising ease... (guess who was bored at work again)

    With regards to over complication of a magnetic retarder hrmm yes maybe but I bought Big Red as a Tow motor. Putting spring brakes on the back end removes the need for the existing park brake. Put the retarder down as an optional extra.

    To clarify, at the time we bought Big Red the plan was to get a huge caravan. Her offroad capability when going through the requirements list was put down as "It should be able to get to within cooee of where I broke down when playing in the bug or kermit" Just cause I happend to get a lot more than I asked for, well sometimes a bloke deserves a win.

    What are you going to tow that would require compression braking?

    I tow around the three tonne mark regularly with no problems in the braking capabilities of the Td5. The only mod is the fitment of an electric brake controller

    everything, yep the brakes on the deefer alone are enough to keep it all under control but my preference and driving style has me using the engine compression and gear box to normally keep things under control. Earlier on in the thread i made mention of being a passanger in a vehicle thats suffered brake fade on descents... this is what im trying to avoid... brake fade effects trailers too.

    my concern is the lack of engine braking with a manual td5 once fully loaded or with a trailer on..

    according to the blue oval gits when big red went in for her 60k Km service she should have had new brake pads... but didnt as the old ones were still over 70% wear remaining.

    Braking

    From a logical point of view, would'nt a dual cab Isuzu truck be the go??. Available in 4wd if required. Only exhaust brake is available on the smaller units up to 6tonne I think.

    What and loose the prestige of owning a Landy?

    Seriously I was looking at 6x6 international butterboxes (could get one with a roadwortyh for $11k) but SWMBO controls the purse strings. Remembering that at the time I had 3 other rovers in the yard, there were many many considerations made and while this will probabley get me kicked out of the forum the ultra short list came down to

    A Jeep cherokee, a GXL cruiser and Big Red.

    Big Red won out on the following facts

    1. Box sectionLadder Chassis, the jeep and the cruiser had c section frames.
    2. Easy to Clean
    3. Easy to Stow
    4. Posted Fuel economy

    The first one was the clincher for me, 2+3 for connie and 4 was a joint thing.
