    Water Proofing With Silicon Grease

    Hi,
I was fitting a winch the other day and my mechanic advised to spreay the electrical box with a silicon grease to waterproof.

I got some Wurth Electrical Silicon Grease in a spray can.

This got my mind thinking has any one had any experience with this how would ity go on the TD5 Series 2 Disco ECU and other connections???

    Cheers

    it would go very messy......
thats some blQQdy good grease...and very greasy......hard to clean off your hands......
dont step on it either....you will get it on the pedals...which could make for some interesting driving techniques.......

the best way to waterproof something is to seal it up air tight......
with winches......its not uncommon to pressurise the unit by running a compressor to it......
you just switch the compressor on before going through the water.....
its done mainly for competition work........

with the ecu.....you could fit it in a container....similar to a lunchbox....and seal it up so if you do happen to go swimming it wont get wet......
but make sure you install a breather tube so it doesnt pop open in the heat.....

From memory, I think Silicon grease is dielectric......so while it will repell water it may cause problems if it gets in between the contacts in the plugs/connectors.

I do know LR specifically warn against using it to protect Battery Terminals.....they advise using good old Petroleum Jelly.

Also there may be LR Genuine wiring loom extensions to mount the ECU higher up, like there is for certain model RRs with petrol V8s.

its bad enough trying to find a spot for the cb radio.......
but yes.....you can get extension harnesses......but not from land rover....
i think it was someone like greame coopers.....or bruce davis......(bad memory.....sorry...)

Saw a product a while back in the UK mags where the guy mounted the TD5 ECU high up on the cargo barrier, and they make these extension cables for it.
