I think this topic has been touched on before, maybe try a search. But briefly, the vac advance unit gives more ignition advance at light throttle (highway cruise) to give better fuel economy.
Took my v8 disco to get a proper MAJOR service the other week and have been told my vacuum advance unit isn't working anymore and was quoted approx $300 to fit and replace, I'm guessing it has been broken for a while.
My question is what does it do ? and is it easy to replace yourself and how much are the parts normally ?
Matt.

From memory the vac advance unit shouldn't be more than $100. Fitting is a DIY job also if you know one end of a spanner from the another.
I think there is something in the Land Rover FAQ on OL about where to get cheap vac advances.
thanks, yeah did search beforehand, wasn't much info on what it did though![]()
Thx, Yeah not bad with a spanner or twoOriginally Posted by TuffRR

Just had a look in the Haynes manual and can't find a thing on removing it ? Unless I'm looking in the wrong place !
Also can the unit be removed and the car still be driven ?

you can drive without it, and timing is the same as per a non electronic unit, I still do it this way
1. adjust the marks to proper alignment.
2. timing light it with the engine running to manufacturer's specs
3. listen to it and give it a tweak if it doesnt sound like before/how it should
4. let the customer have it back for a test drive then make any final adjustments if they are not 100% happy with it.
