    What wheels and tyres?

    I'm planning on having 2 sets of wheels and tyres for the County - I've roadworthied it with some cheap road tyres (Simex roadtreckers) on the standard rims. Next I plan to get some off-road tyres, but first some rims.

    The wheel choices readily available are:

    1) Standard wheels on ebay - apx $60 per corner
    2) 15 x 7 steel on ebay - apx $50 per corner
    3) RR Vogue alloys on ebay - apx $60+ per corner
    4) New 16 x 7 steelies for $150+ per corner.

    What would you suggest?

    My thoughts are that the standard wheels are too narrow for a lot of larger off-road tyres (say 255/85), the 15 inch wheels seem to demand tyres that are either shorter or wider (or both) than I'd prefer, the alloys might not be up to rough driving, and the new steelies are nearly three times the price of the other options.

    Decide on your tyre size first, then work out the rim that suits.

    Anything a decent width is going to rub on the radius arms or spring towers with standard offset rims. So you need to anticipate the offset.

    255/85/16s I'm guessing are the tallest tyre that will fit standard rims, but theres only a couple of manufacturers in that size.

    I'd reckon 16 x 7 steel rims with 235/85 r16 tyres will do the job nicely.

    For a County I'd definitely recopmmend steel rather than alloy rims for off road work. They take more punishment.

    Can fit the 235/85 on the standard 5.5 rims, Vlad, so what is the advantage of the 7, given the almost $100 difference? I was thinking of 255/85/16 but do realise that limits choice of tread pattern.

    Steel over alloy get my vote for off road. As for size depends on what you wish to run.

    I am with Tusker on this - choose tyre size and get rims to match. To be on the safe side, look at the tyre manufacturer's recommended rim size range.

    My Series II has steel Disco rims (7inch) which are too wide for 750s so I have 235/85. Nice. If you want more tyre size options and better offset you may want to look into 130/Wolf rims. Might have to import them from the UK...

    If you look HERE BFG AT's tech specs might give you an idea of the tyre/rim size combos ...

    Perhaps the request was begging the question.

    235/85 can be fitted to standard rims. That's what I've got at present.

    750 in good tread seem hard to find on the net - and no-one here seems to use them.

    For added height I'd go for a 255/85/16 - don't like wider tyres than I need.

    So i think 16 x 7 is the best bet.

    But I could get alloys for the road tyres and use the original rims off-road with up to 235/65/16.

    Hmmm. Might start a thread on tyre choices in 750 and see what people say...

    Went into Ace Tyres yesterday and asked about the Staun Lock beads.
    Seen a Hilux with a set on and low pressures drive up a steep track very effortlessly in the High Country.
    Has anyone experience with these.

    And those looking for cheap rims for their LandRover they had made a mistake in a previous order and have stacks of steel rims which they need to offload. eg. 160 x7 $85net and other sizes. Ring 02 9604 3777

    Steel Disco rims look good on Defenders/County's. 16x7. Good range of sizes and treads available. Even get them reversed (better offset) and go BIG.

    I've got Goodyear Wrangler AT's in 7.50 x 16 on my 109" Series 2A ......think they're great off road! and absolutely able to handle on road stuff really well, especially braking and corners in wet weather.
