Lightbulb Defender: Spare wheel on the bonnet

Making enquiries into carrying the spare on the bonnet of my 1999 Defender.
Have seen a few 110's getting around with the wheel on the bonnet but always mobile, just waved and wondered how???
I am thinking of just carrying a tyre only on the bonnet.
Does the bonnet have to be changed or just reinforced.
Any ideas or thoughts on this thread much appreciated

    thanks in advance
    Mal

Can't do on a TD5. The bonnet reinforcing was changed to shoehorn in the engine.

The kit is still listed as an option though.

This came up once before. Someone found a chequerplate kit from Opposite Lock I think, that will do the job. No idea how successful or otherwise though.

mmmmmm.....I've thought/fantasised about using aluminium treadplate and fitting some gas struts onto a Disco and mounting a second spare on the bonnet! .......would look pretty good together with a full basket type roof rack and rear door ladder!

I always reccommend getting a second (poor condition) bonnet and then mount the wheel on that.

As has been mentioned, the TD5 bonnet won't have the re-inforcing that you'd get on the earlier models but a sheet of checker plate should solve that. Drill the relevant holes for the clamp and make sure you change the bonnet prop for the single bar type (the hinged one will just collapse).
