When adding the sensors to the ecu, do you need to put a catalytic converter in as well, because doesn't one sensor go before and the other after the cat ?
The Jaycar kit, I have looked at a couple of times, what sensor did you use with it and where did you mount it ? I did find a better kit a while back that used a wideband sensor, because I thought the Jaycar one wouldn't be that good, then i saw the price of a wideband sensor and the kit !
edit, this is the kit http://techedge.com.au/vehicle/wbo2/ bit expensive though.

No there is 1 sensor per bank before the cat. When adding the sensors to the ecu, do you need to put a catalytic converter in as well, because doesn't one sensor go before and the other after the cat ?

The sensors then give the ECU the ability to recognise which bank a problem lies. Later USA 38A have 4 sensors 2 before and 2 after.
You do not need a cat.
Ther eis a cheaper wideband kit now available made by NGK. they are US$259.
