    Coolants

    I have just drained the truck after my rebuild and was about to put the new coolant in with the final flush.
    The stuff I was recommended is Valvoline G05.
    It's green so I'm now rather put off with starting the problem over again. Anyone know if this stuff is ok or not?

    I thought the Td5 has to have the red coolant..OAT. I believe there is a chemical reaction with the metals when you change from the red to the green coolant...and its not nice.

    Yes thats what killed the engine before, Electrolasis. I'm now searching the web for the right one as I don't feel safe putting this one in there.

    The main thing whether it's green or red - the colour isn't important, but what is

    Rick also described problems with a small elecrtic current found in the coolant which neccessitated earthing the radiator.

    Voltage probe in the tank (not touching metal) & the other probe to earth.


    I have always used Castrol Anti-boil/Anti-freeze to 50/50 in my V8i. Last look it still appeared nice & clean in there.

    Then ONLY use:

    # the correct TYPE of coolant [red OAT or green monoethylene glycol and approved specification Standards/Type Approvals]!!!!

    # the correct CONCENTRATION [mixing ratio - i.e. 50 : 50 or whatever]!!!!!

    # the correct BRAND [manufacturers approved by LR]!!!!

    # the correct SERVICE PROCEDURES to fill/install/bleeding etc/change [drain + replace intervals]!!!!

    # the correct same above to ANCILLARY/INTEGRAL COOLING SYSTEMS PARTS or SUB-SYSTEMS [thermostats, belts, fans, switches, radiators, cleaning off dirt etc]!!!!

    that Land Rover lists in its LATEST specifications schedule for YOUR vehicle type, model, variant, version, engine, market, environmental conditions, expected range of usages etc......

    .......you can't do much better than that - although you can do some research and find some, perhaps, better or alternative solutions to all or any of the above.

    Yeah....all that is ok but the 'must be correct brand' had me stumped. I could not find the Havoline anywhere so I went for the Nulon Longlife OAT. I could not see a problem with using this as it seemed to be the same specs as the Havoline.

    I change my coolant at every 60,000k's so it didn't seem to make much difference.

    Another question is I always believed that the OAT coolant was red and the glycol was green. Is it only a dye to make sure you have the correct coolant?

    Answers to your Q's:........

    Halvoline is a brand by Caltex......try at Caltex servos?!?!??

    You really need to make ABSOLUTELY SURE that it [or any product or any fluid etc] meets or exceeds the LR specifications!!

    Yeah, I think it's an internationally agreed upon thing to make the two different types are totally opposite colours using dyes to make it very clear or dissuade you from mixing the two or to make sure you pick the same correct type.

    All antifreezes contain glycol - but not all are OAT, as said before the colour doesn't matter - just the contents - and MUST NOT CONTAIN Methanol.

    Been off getting the correct one so only just read the other replies. I also rang the supplier to be certain. He still tried to say it was ok to use any coolant but I found the one I need. So now its been drained again to remove any crap still in there after the flush and filled for the final time. I also now have both wipers.
