Disco1 - Harmonic Balancer sheared off

The least of my problems after the LROC/AULRO Wattagans Tuff Trip, but I wondered if anyone can tell me what these things do, do I need one and if so what's the best way to repair it?

Can I use some kind of super-adhesive to stick it back together?

A harmonic balancer (also called crank pulley damper, torsional damper or vibration damper) is a device connected to the crankshaft of an engine to reduce torsional vibration.

Every time the cylinders fire, torque is imparted to the crankshaft. The crankshaft deflects under this torque, which sets up vibrations when the torque is released. At certain engine speeds the torques imparted by the cylinders are in synch with the vibrations in the crankshaft, which results in a phenomenon called resonance. This resonance causes stress beyond what the crankshaft can withstand, resulting in crankshaft failure.

To prevent this vibration, a harmonic balancer is attached to the front part of the crankshaft. The damper is composed of two elements: a mass and an energy dissipating element. The mass resists the acceleration of the vibration and the energy dissipating (rubber/clutch/fluid) element absorbs the vibrations.

    Yeh what he said

So it's basically a weight that keeps the crankshaft from vibrating out of sync at high revolutions, is this correct?

Oh I thought it was the one of the engine mind you I was still slightly edgy from the balancing act Slunnie and myself had to perform two minutes beforehand

Perhaps I'm using the wrong name? This is a large round weight (see the photo) bolted on to the front diff and serving no obvious purpose.

You just need a V8 engine mount.
    STC434.

Yes, it's a harmonic damper, designed to make the Disco nicer to drive. You probably won't need it now anyway. Leave it off & see if you can notice the difference.
I betcha can't, especially with those big shoes your Disco wears .

oh i know what u mean now, i saw it the other day and thought "WTF" does that do, .....finally i came to the conclusion that it was out there so that when youre lying under the vehicle contemplating how to stop the numerous oil leaks, ...you can divert your mind from the leak problems to stare at "IT" and ponder .." i wonder WTF that does"!!!

its purely there to distract you.....hahaha

when it falls off - which it will do, you don't loose it or it doesn't hit anything else and cause more damage
