    oil for a V8?

which oil do you suggest for an early carb 3.5 V8?

    mineral?
    semi synthetic?
    fully synthetic?

    20/50?
    15/50?

    anything else?

    thanks.

I use Penrite HPR Gas 20-60 this seems to be fine
Rover say 20-50 for the earlier engines

I'm biased towards 5w/15W-40 diesel oils as they have a much more robust additive package and should provide better protecion than a petrol oil in a heavily used 4x4.

In the past I have put diesel oil in old petrol engines to have them start to burn excessive oil due to the high detergent content cleaning it out.
I maybe wrong but unless the v8 is in good nick you will probably have little oil pressure at idle when its hot with that grade of oil.

    Tread carefully

Have been a Penrite user for the past 20ish years.

I used to use HPR50, but switched to HPR30 a couple of years ago.

I recently tried the 30/70 but the pressures seemed inconsistant.
The blurb reckons it reduces oil leaks and produces better pressures (or something like that).
    Nope!

    Reverted back to to HPR30.

you seem to favour penrite quite a lot. is there a reason for this? the hpr would possibly be a little too thick as winter is about to set in (u.k)
penrite products are available here, and they do a 15/60. would you suggest this over say a 15/50?

I've used Penrite on my 1988 RR since I got it at 200,000km. At 350,000 I put it on LPG and switched to Penrite HPR Gas and it's still going strong (no leaks, doesn't use oil either) at 427,000km. - I wouldn't risk putting in anything else. I think it should be fine for the cold winters, but why not send the Penrite factory an email and get a technical opinion. I always buy at the factory, so always ask for tech advise on oils, I would rather email the factory than ask the local dealer.

I too use Penrite HPR in the V8 county. No oil loss and as clean as a whistle at 345,000k's. Steve
