    SIIa Gearbox.

    Hi all guys,

Just thought I would post a question to the all knowing forum.

My gearbox has always crunched a little bit going from 1st to 2nd
unless the gear change was done slowly and carefuly.

Now it has started to intermitently jump out of 2nd.

It is strange that if I test 2nd gear by driving in second and alternating heavy
throttle and no throttle, sort of bunny hopping down the road,
    stays in gear no problem.

If I replicate the same experiment it will pop straight out.

this would be a ratio of 3 to 1 with 3 successful changes to second gear to 1 unsuccessful change to second gear.

this failing of second hapens the same with normal gentle driving.

Could this be a selector fork detent problem, or is it time pull out the
    seat box ?

    cheers for any info

    j

if its a 2a box, its likely to be a combination of a weak detent/interlock spring and a worn selector...

you dont need to pull the box to check it you can get it apart enough for an inspection by pulling the floor plates and manipulating the parts out... (selector rod cover, rods and selector forks,)

    G'day Sealo

If it is a 2a box, it is Non -Syncro in First and Second, Crash Box, and needs to be double clutched between them,(clutch in ,to neutral, clutch out ,clutch in to 2nd, easy when you know how,

2nd to 3rd and 3rd to top are Syncro,

the jumping (slipping out of gear on the over-run is a sign of worn detent springs and balls, also possibly the selector lever knob at the bottom, it has a ball shape end with a grove in it, which takes a "$1.10 cent O ring" in it most of the time people just braze/ weld a blob on the end that gives you poor selection as the gears do not fully engage.

    cheers.

What Uncle Ho said - make sure you double-clutch the changes, and blip the throttle while double clutching the down changes. If you have done a lot of driving without doing this you may have worn dog-teeth out (where the gears engage) on 2nd gear - could also be a problem.

Hee hee, I owned my IIA for about a year before I learnt that there was no synchro on 1st and 2nd.

Learnt to double de-clutch and all was smooth again. (Except when my wife was driving, she could never get the hang of it so only used 3rd & 4th, made for interesting cornering!).

That would be the no clutch change....

confuses the hell out of driving assessors who dont know how to do it..

    Yup. We do.
If you could drive a blitz, then anything else - even a Studebaker 6x6 was easy.

When the slave cylinder on my IIA died in a big way I drove from Rover Park to Brisbane with no clutch. Toll booths and traffic lights were fun but other than that no problems.
