re ride height - is the LHS lower than the right ? If so they may be designed so vehicle is even when driven (as is usual) with just the driver on board.
G'day All
For those of you who have been following the project thread on "Princess Fiona" you will know that I recently purchased and installed new springs and shoks.
I brought Rancho RS5000 shoks and Tough Dog springs.
Has anyone used this combination and if so what were the results?
What is the general readers thoughts on both of these products?
From first installation there was a "knocking"sound in the front right corner. After a couple of days this could be "Felt"
under my feet on the drivers side.
Visual inspection revealed nothing so on Saturday with a mate bouncing the front right up and down I went searching. Given that the vehicle has only travelled 38,000k I discounted control arm rubbers or forward knuckles. Useing my hands on the suspension components I traced the "knock" to the front shok.I now suspect that the piston and seal assembly has never been tightened up on the shaft end and its "flogging" up and down within the shok body.
4Wd1 have been good about it and have supplied another shok to fit.
Anyone with any "war" stories please do tell.
Incidentally the springs seem ok but there is at least a 10-15mm variation in hieght from left side to right.

I would never buy ranchos personally. A mate ripped the eyes off both (brand new) shocks on one trip. Granted they were 80-series shocks on a RR/LR hybrid but that doesn't make a difference. The welding was atrocious - just fusion/spot welded, not double-welded like most other shocks.
Oh crap, looks like I might have made a bad choice. What would most ppl fit?
Vlad, Passenger side is down so you might be right.
I don't have them at the moment, but the majority of opinion seem to be Bilstein.
I had some tough dogs in my GrandVitara (2" lift) and lets just day they were pretty darn average... I think I will be going to kingspings for my D110 upgrade!
Can we frame this response please people.Originally Posted by Stevo_62

I have RS5000 ranchos on the Disco, they last about 20,000ks, i'm going pro-comp.
The Rancho importer here in Sydney won't fit them to Landrovers, need i say more.

May be worth also checking shock mountings - I had OME shocks that started knocking at the front. Visually everything looked OK but I discovered that the lower mounting bolts on both sides had become loose (presumably from compaction of the poly washers) and worn away the holes in the lower mounting brackets with resultant knocking. The OME washers did not look to be proper fit either which might have had something to do with it. Now have Bilsteins - no complaints.
