    A Classic starting problem

    Hello,

My 92 Classic dose'nt like starting on the first go, but will fire up in an instant on the second go, dose'nt matter if hot or cold.

Any ideas where i should start looking?, not really a big problem, just one of those niggly things that crop up....all the time

    Cheers,

    Ray

I would have thought as it fires up on the second turn - the delay is because of lack of fuel getting to the spot on the first turn.

Couldn't be electrical as it would cause problems at other times

    Just a thought

Or I guess it could be too much fuel on the first kick - you can test for this - on a cold start ask somebody to start the engine for you and you stand near the exhaust exit - if you smell petrol that could be it. If you don't refer to my first suggestion.

though it may have been the fuel thing so i've been turning the ignition and waiting till the fuel pump gets someup to the engine, has'nt made any difference

Well you can always check if the fuel is getting through.

Crank the engine first time, then take out a spark plug and see if it's wet or can smell petrol on it. If not is the pump up to spec.?

I am sure the are carb adjustments that can be done to overcome this - if in fact it is the case.

I've noticed the same happens with nearly every V8 injected Land Rover I've driven.
Whether brand new off the truck or 100000km old, they all do the same. My 300000km RR does it too.

They'll turn over a few times on the fit hit of the starter before firing but if you stop the starter before the motor fires then try again, it will fire almost instantly.

I've always suspected it's fuel pressure related but, as far as I know, not a single customer at work has ever mentioned it as a problem. Maybe they just crank it until it starts.

Hope this isn't a hijack; my MY97 V8i does it too now. Since new (to me, 8 months) it fired before I could let go of the key but lately it'll crank 4-5 secs without attempting to fire. Have new leads and have just bought Lucas button & cap (ouch). Will advise if there's an improvement when fitted.

My bet is the fuel pressure regulator not holding fuel pressure at the injectors(had an XE falcoon that did it).
Should be able to confirm by turning the key to on a couple of times before cranking(assuming the rangie system gives a short priming blast like the early ford system)
If it starts instantly pretty well confirms the problem.
Another way the regulator rears its ugly head is dropping off power when at full roar as its letting too much pressure back to the tank, back off and all is well, there is your culprit.
