ps. there is nothing like a chipped TD5! unless its in a 90![]()
I remember reading in the forum awhile ago that there were a couple of posts about TD5 ECU upgrades. Just thought that I would give you guys who are thinking of getting an upgraded ECU a little feedback.
Basically, just go out and get it done!!!!
I have just had the ECU from my 2003 TD5 Defender 90 upgraded by Tombraider and it is absolutely brilliant. I can not believe that I waited so long before getting done. It has really transformed the car, making it much more responsive and pleasurable to drive.
The extra performance is very noticeable, particularly in 3rd 4th and 5th gear. It pulls away hard even when I just feather the accelerator. It just seems to want to go and go. (That is until you run out of gears which seems to happen much quicker now these days![]()
)
The torque increase makes easy work of hills and steep climbs. Hills that used to slow me down now aren’t a problem. I just accelerate up them with seemingly little effort. The upgrade is just an all-round great package.
There doesn’t seem to be any increase in exhaust smoke either. Well not that I can tell anyway. Can’t really comment on fuel economy just yet but don’t think that it has made much difference anyway, and if there is an increase it’s a small price to pay for the extra performance.
I don’t use my 90 to tow anything so unfortunately I can’t comment on difference that the extra torque from the upgrade will make when towing heavy loads.
All in all, VERY impressed with the upgrade. Should have had it done a long time ago.
So for anybody who is considering getting this upgrade done have a look in the markets section for Tombraider’s post about his upgrades. You won’t be disappointed.![]()

Hey Phil
No, just running the standard intercooler at the moment. I considered getting the intercooler done as well but thought that I would just try the ECU upgrade first too see how much difference it made. And to be honest I am more than happy with the extra performance at the moment.
But one can never have too much power though I suppose.![]()

I’ve also had a 3” exhaust system fitted for a while now too which allows the turbo to spool up faster so that the turbo lag isn’t much of an issue.

The day it gets here it will be done that day and sent same day/following morning dependant on arrival time.Originally Posted by discowhite
Im interested but have some minor concerns... those being
1. fuel economy, I frequently clear the magic 10k/l number (this was a primary consideration in buying big red.)
2. gearbox longevity when towing with the extra power
If I can get some reliable info particualry in reference to the fuel economy I'll bump it up the schedule but ATM mods are plotted for next financial year and I still have to make up the order of the wish list.

dave, do a search on any of the UK landy sites.
i did this search awhile ago and found no probs with the gear bag. mixed responses with fuel economy, leaning toward better especially in modded LR's, thoes running larger tyres.
cheers phil
It was the mixed responses that are my concern... and from what I saw most of the guys who've done it are Uk based which is a different kettle of fish to here.. upgrading the power of the donk isnt going to make much difference to the fuel economy if you spend half the day idling in a traffic jam![]()
