    Defender wheel nuts.

    Hi

Anyone had trouble undoing wheel nuts on a defender after there been on for a while?. My wheel brace now looks like a corkscrew , Just put the spare on , they are standard wheel but had a shocker time getting those nuts undone. have had it happen before.

    Cheers Sumo

For a really stuck on wheel nut get a breaker bar (or just the wheel spanner) and slide over it about a 1.2 meter piece of steel water pipe then stand on it and it will usually move it.

Go and buy a 27mm impact rated socket (or 1 1/8th) and the biggest nasties right angle bar you can find... put them on and stand on the end.. No joy add a 1.2m bit of pipe (hilift jack handle works well.. now stand on that..

Do not try this if you have one of those cheap and nasty cross brace wheel braces....

Once youve got the wheels of prior to reassably add some anti sieze to the threads on the studs and the face flange on the nut...

Theres a difference between heavy duty and impact rated....

I found that out the hard way, not long after I found out about not cheater bar-ing a wheel brace....

    Yes, there was laughter involved....

    No it wasnt me laughing....

It was one of those moments where I had enough time to pause and think....

I wonder if its that allegegedly brainy guys make stupider mistakes to compensate for the extra smarts, or Its just the difference between a smart move and a dumb one seems so much bigger...

But I didnt think that untill I went sprawling across works carpark and into the gutter.......

    For the second time.....

27mm is same size as the main Crank bolt.

I too turned my LR brace in to modern art this week with a stuck nut.

Then got the very good brand 3/4 drive 27mm single hex socket and big breaker bar and jumped on that. Third bounce it came un done.

Bought some nickel anti seize and put on the trheads of all studs and used torque wrench to put them all back.

I hate rust and rattle guns!!

the anti sieze comes in an over sized lipstick type container for apout $12 from Repco.

I would have been stuffed if on the road with just the LR brace.

Major problem I have had is not rust but tyre fitters with rattle guns. Even with anti seize compound on threads and nut shoulders. Despite the tyre fitters assuring me they use tension wrenches.

Yep, that's EXACTLY it. I used to stand by and make sure my wheel nuts were hand tightened on my Defender. Mainly because I once got stuck for 3 hours in a sewage treatment plant (don't ask) trying to fix a flat. I had to jump up and down on the brace to undo the spares nuts while hanging onto the roof rack because they'd been rattled on, and then used the standard LR brace jammed against the kerbing to undo the wheel nuts of the flat (so as you reverse the brace undoes the nut). It doesn't matter how long ago the wheel was fitted either - 1 day was enough to have them jammed solid.
