did you try with the centre diff locked in ?
Hi everybody I am new here and come asking a question![]()
I have a 95 Landrover Discovery Tdi auto and was just starting out on a road trip when all of a sudden I lost all gears, even park is gone!!!!! There was no bang nothing, have checked the trans fluid and it is ok, there is a slight gear sound from the trans when the vehicle is stationary and engine ideling, I noticed the hi/low shift leverwould not engage properly so got under and played with the linkages and now it goes through the gates as it would normally do, anyone have thoughts as to what it is??? Unfortunately i cant check the vehicle now as it is 300 kays away at a friends house, I am thinking the transfer case may be gone but will be grateful for anyone who can give some advice, thanks.
did you try with the centre diff locked in ?
Hi there Crossy i did have a play around with the centre diff lock etc but there is no gears at all including park which to me is very strange, i am thinking the trans has dropped out of high range as i has done that in the past if not engaged properly, (but there was always a loud bang if this happened and i have seen the exact same thing happen on other landys), on this occasion there was no sound it just went into freewheel and that was it, i am thinking maybe the linkage has managed to pop off but i cant get to look at it until Thursday

Sorry for being the bearer of bad news but it is more than likley the first clutch pack in the gear box,it goes and you have nothing at all (at least this was the problem in my sons car same symptons)

Do autos suffer from the stripped spline in the transfer case input gear problem?

A 95 disco as built, will not have the input cog to the transfer case drilled so should suffer the wear we are familiar with - I understood that autos also had the problem but it wasn't as bad as the manuals because the auto cushions the shocks that occue when manual is changing gears etc.
If drive stopped all of a sudden it could be the splines on the input end of the transfer case have finally worn through and the slackness in the drive has been masked by the auto.

Yes they do.Originally Posted by Graeme
But it is only necessary to replace the spud shaft from the back of the auto, and the t/case input gear. Both can be replaced with the transmission and t/case in situ.
The spud shaft is different (longer splines) for the cross drilled input gear.
Thanks for the replys fellas will be good if i dont have to pull the trans out will have to see.
You all know what the next line is going to say before you finish reading it so lets do the obvious...
This is why I dont like autos.... Ok rant bit over...
first pull the inspection plate/pto plate from the tcase and make sure its not the tcase, That will generally be the cheaper of the two. while your at it remove the drain bing from the bellhousing and make sure the oils not coming out there
There are inspection type plugs on the side of the box these allow you access to the different portions of the box for testing pressures...
Grab the right adaptors and a fluid filled pressure gauge put it in the car and run through the check procedure as per the service manual for your box....
If the pressures all come up roses then its time to pull the box...
If its not your last best hope is to pull the pan and check the filter and whats in the bottom of the pan. Let me know and I'll speak to the auto guru at work....
Keep your eye on the evil grey boxes posts Im doing in the technical chatter side.
