Yep your on ya way now mate![]()
welcome to the club your car was testing you![]()
well ive had my disco 1 about 4 weeks so far and realised ive never had a car before where i spent more time under it than in it.....lolol'
last night i finished installing my new digital temp guage that monitors engine temp and not water temp.....everything was fine , started her up , checked the guage was working then off to bed , ready to replace the coolant after my boilover last week up the beach.
up early , jumps in the beast to run her out on the driveway..no go, nada,....nix........zip........the big zero .
flat battery?....nah ..couldnt be ..fired perfectly before i hit the fartsack..
that dw 40 and contact cleaner i sprayed on every terminal i could find.?....maybe the cleaner dissolved some plastics in the system?
ignition on,,,,can hear the relay under the dash clicking, lights arent dimming , but the ones under the auto t bar are...wtf?
check the terminals on the battery...theyre ok...........check terminals on solenoid and starter motor ........could be a bit dirty ..clean and tighten..(why do the poms have to put everything where u need a triple jointed arm and the fingers of a 5 yr old to get to them...and then allen keys to boot)
hit the key ..............zip!! nothing.
drag another battery out and jury rig the starter motor from underneath ...hey it spins but no sound of the pinion gear engaging ..............sheet..it must be the battery ..so on with the charger.....
wait a while for the float charge to be available.....hit her again.............nothing.
ok..this is starting to p1ss me off.......scrounge a peice of thin cable , crimp on a lug , stick it on the solenoid . then bridge it to the +ve terminal on the solenoid .....nice spark...welded itself the terminal....pull it off ..try again ..ditto/
uhoh somethings shagged....rings up the local landrover parts dude..no second hand solenoids or starters , but have a complete new set for $390.......groan.
lying under the beast covered in dirt and oil, bits of grit falling into my eyes......oh God what have i done to deserve this???....lolol
then, mate rolls up tells him the story , asks whats the chances of a lift to get parts.......he says "let me have a look "....
now this guy owned a wrecking yard for 10 years and has pulled apart and rebuilt engines , auto and marine for 40 years....he goes through similar checks.......then the bridging out ....."hmm this sparking and no go when i short out the starter solenoid isnt nice............."go find me a ball peen hammer!"
yours truly hasnt had one of those for years so passes him under a claw hammer........."WHACK ...WHACK...BANG...BANG " .............ok.........hit her in the guts.
VROOOOOOOM!!!!
"BLOODY HELL MATE"..... ive been ginning around for 3 hours trying to find what was wrong ...and you whack it and it goes........what gives?
he climbs out from under ..dusts off his hands ..grins and says ..."i told ya not to buy pommie crap".....lolol
the volkswagen was hitlers revenge ...........and the pommie cars are their revenge for having bad dental work"...........another grin .."seeya..i got a boat to deliver in Sydney"......and he was gone .
so now i think im getting the hang of these pommie vehicles...............just about anything can be fixed with a hammer!!!!
(but i do like driving the pig)..![]()

Ahhh yes the "Landrover percussive maintenance procedure.
If it doesnt work by itself apply the "agressive Expletive adjustment" in conjuction with the "Percussive maintenance procedure"
When that doesnt work utter the secret swear words that scare them all into starting every go...
"If you dont start next time I am going to park you in front of a toyota dealership and let them laugh at you."
but be careful with this last one, they have long memories and will leave you with many skinned kuckles and be just annoying enough to make you hate them, but not so annoying as to make you sell them.
In seriousness, take the starter out one nice cool day and open the solenoid up (2 little bolts/screws) dont dissasemble it then spray a little inox or lanolin based spray lube into it.

I find that British cars (especially Land Rovers) are the best to work on...have you ever worked on any Japanese vehicles? They are deadset nightmares to work on..(why do the poms have to put everything where u need a triple jointed arm and the fingers of a 5 yr old to get to them...and then allen keys to boot)
I've had to use the hammer trick on holdens, subarus and toyotas. It's just a starter motor thing.
It's character building though isn't it? See how much you've already learned.
Yep, you're getting the hang of it - all that anguish and you can still post about it with 'lol' at the end. Good work.![]()
What a good story.
But there is still a correct procedure for adjustng with the AEA & the PMP.If it doesnt work by itself apply the "Agressive Expletive Adjustment" in conjuction with the "Percussive Maintenance Procedure"
It needs to be adjusted with just the right amount of torque & pressure on the correct spot.
Yep, upset the buggers just once & you're dead meat for sure. Forgiveness is also not in their vocabulary.![]()
You are not wrong!! helped put a starter in a 100 series landcruiser, Bloody terrible. When he said he was going to change the spark plugs (4.5 petrol) i took one lookOriginally Posted by timberwolf_302

yeah everyone laughs at me when I wheel in a rover to work on... till it only takes me half as long to do a job as the guys who are doing the same job on a pootrol, toymota, or their rice burners...
25 minutes to set valves, set timing and change oil and filter...
Meanwhile nupmty with the East West engined ricer is still trying to get the motor to stop on TDC... god bless the crank handle.

What's this? I've hit more falcon and holden starters than landie ones!!! Tell him thanks for helping but keep ya comments to yourself.
And I concur about the jap stuff, has anyone fitted fuel filters to LC80 4.5's?
or fuel filters to Hyundai sonata V6's?
I had to buy a special tool to undo fuel filters on camrys!!!
I'd rather work on 'pommy c**p' ANYTIME!!!!
