Thread: Disco 1 300Tdi gets hot when towing up hills.

I have the same issue when using my 1995 300 TDi towing our 2 tonne boat. Running around all day around town without the boat and the temperature gauage never moves. Stick the boat on and add some hills and the gauage starts to move north. Only one very steep hill I have to drop down to 1st gear to keep the engine from working too hard and breaching the temp red-line.

I had my radiator out and NatRad said it was 20% blocked with mud and stuff, so I am hoping this fixes my temp issues, so I will re-post next time I do the Coastal run up my fav (not) hill.

I had a hot problem on a recent trip up north.

Going up Thunderbolt's Way there's a very long, steep hill that I needed 3rd at full throttle for about 15-20minutes (it's a bugger of a hill!). The gauge moved for the first time I can ever remember and got as far as the top white mark (not the red). After that it cooled again OK but for the rest of my 4 week trip the Disco would get hot for no apparent reason - doing 100 up a slight hill, aircon on while it was 40 degrees outside, etc. It used a lot of water as well, about 2 litres every 1000km or so.

Finally it overheated at Longreach on the way home and has played silly buggers ever since. So I took it to my mechanic today and found it's got 3 cracks in the head (ouch - associated bill = !#*!$$$$$). So the poor old thing is getting a new head and valves today, and the pocket is feeling decidedly light.
