    theres been quite a few Disco 2 TD5 complete cars for under 10k, i'd be looking at buying a cheap one and parting it out and keep the engine

    These engines are all at an age where doing the sump gasket wouldnt be a waste anyhow. The time and effort wasted to figure out if the bolt had or hadnt been checked could be better spent just doing the job and being certain.

    Just do it.

    i know that my 2002 disco hadnt got Loctitie on and was 'not tight'

    cant remember about the defender tho.... brain has gone into shutdown.... i think it was ok... and thats a 2002....

    That doenst help does it?

    A friend has a 2005 td5 Defender and the oil pump sprocket bolt came loose at +-180000kms.

    Thanks for the replies. I can get a 2003 MY (pamel) damaged Tdi5 from a local wrecker that has just over 100k on it - Can anyone tell me whether this will be a straight swap in? Is it worth the hassel? Are there engine or mounting variations to look out for? Is the swap complicated? A mate and I are thinking we'd like a challenge of doing the swap as I have access to full workshop and tools etc... Could be a good little project. Alternative at this stage is to sell car to a wrecker, which I am less than happy with.

    Have just checked this bolt on my 2004 td5 defender with 170K - bolt was not finger loose - but was not at all tight - little finger on a short 3/8 drive ratchet easily undid it and there was no loctitie on the bolt at all.

    Has gone back in much tighter and with 262 loctite.

    Was an accident waiting to happen.
