any indication that there was a problem?? What year is your vehicle?

I can tell you, and you probably don't want to hear this, but a new motor is upwards of $16K.....

Sorry to hear that this has claimed another victim...

Just had my service guy recommend getting this done next service. I'm at 110,000km and from this thread will make sure its done ASAP.

So let me get this right. LR forget loctite. Take no responsibilty, do norecall. But then recommend which type of Loctite in thier manual.

If I get it done is there anything else that should also be done as a precaution? You mention a modified sump gasket?

I know on the 300Tdi a timing chain converstion, but what about the Td5. I want to keep this puppy, apart from this bolt does anyone have any other suggestions that are worth investing in now before they go on known problems?

    Thanks for the thread.

Have a look also at the thread for "oil in the harness".

Mine is a '99 model (was) in exc condition with full service history by Land Rover dealer. No indication of a problem, not even any noise - just sudden death.

Not preventative but if the exhaust manifold starts to leak get the end stud holes widened to stop it happening again. Make certain you have the correct coolant as this can be very expensive. Mine suffered this fault and it cost me $3000 with the pull down and rebuild work done by me. I'm now building a replacement oil cooler due to the same issue as it failed just after the rebuild.

Sorry to hear about you woes. If you need a new engine I can get you a second hand one for about $3800 if it's still there. I found out about the engine after doing all the work to mine. You would also have to spend on the shipping though. Ring around the Landy workshops up your way and you might get one.

I have decided to do something about this problem

My '99 D2 has 118,500 k's on the clock so I will do the oil pump bolt at 120,000 k service. I have ordered the parts, sump gasket is in stock but the bolt..none available in Australia Either there has been a rush on the bolts or the problem is really non-existant but would you take the gamble

So here are the part numbers...
    Sump gasket LVF 5400
Oil pump bolt LYP 101 400

The bolt will take about ten days to get here so I will have to wait

It will be very interesting to see what the outcome is after removing the sump.

    Cheers,
    Lyndon.

Well did mine wednesday, pulled the sump of and it was fine, but we had it off so we did it anyway pulled the bolt out cleaned it and locktited it back in.

My Disco it classed as a 2001 model even though the build date is August 2000 and with 125,000ks on the clock i thought might as well, we found a few more problems while under the car but they will be done over the next few weeks.

So all good now and peace of mind too.

Thanks Phil, for the majority of the work, your a legend and this will not go unrewarded

You dont need to replace the bolt if the thread is in good nick, just apply loctite and re install.

    What....for $4.63

The last thing I would want to happen is to pull the sump off and find that the bolt is absolutely stripped or hanging by a thread only to put it back together and wait for a new bolt to arrive from UK.

The other interesting facts from the part listings is that both the gasket and the bolt have been superseeded from original parts.

Suggests to me that LR recognize that there is a problem but are not willing to accept the responsibility

But of course my lawyer can be contacted on......
