    Wheel Offsets

    Hey all,

Went through the archives but couldn't exactly answer my questions. Looking at putting different rims on my Disco. I know the OE rims are a 57mm offset. What is the effect of of fitting rims that have a smaller/larger offset than the originals?

    Cheers

Either increase or decrease the track width.

Usually done to increase the track width in order to fit larger diameter/wider tyres.

I'm not convinced that more offset on the Disco2 will allow you to fit bigger tyres. They will make a big tyre rub on the panels, inner guards and behind the bumper bar. IMHO the factory offset is the best unless you want to get into body lifting and cutting.

I'll do my Elmer Fudd impression here.
    Be verrry verrry careful.
You may find if you have an accident you have given the insurance company an "out clause".
Stick to what the RTA will allow. From memory its 25mm total in Vic.

Cool, thanks for the help fellas. I guess i'll just stick with the stockies for a while then. It sounds like a nice headache trying to get it to work smoothly.

My brother in law certifies trucks, and, correct me if I'm wrong, they certify up to what the authorities allow.
He wont certify even 1cm over the allowed truck body width for example

Yep, Engineers seem to certify anything, but there are some quite specific specs that have been outlines which engineers cant engineer beyond. Big Nissan/Toyota suspension is the best example as engineers cant spec beyond the 1/3 travel rule which is outlined in the regs. Offset is another.

and to get around that you would have to add extended bumpstops?? correct??

As well as increasing the track, greater offset also increases the scrub radius.

Increased scrub radius can cause some steering problems.

The increased track/scrub radius can change the loads on bearings etc. I suspect this is the main reason why there is a limit imposed on increasing the track.
