Loctite 518 is a good sealant. Expensive though.

gives good suggestion to remove the passengers side 8mm bolt from rear plastic cover to allow it to be pushed back, i was able to go one further and take the other one out on the drivers side with the open end of 8mm spanner and then remove the cover completely which foam was completely soaked in oil.

another point is that he doesnt replace the grommet/spacers until the cover is back on, but i found (after failing an attempt to use pegs as suggested here: How to change the td5 wiring harness (and rocker cover gasket)) that by putting them in when the cover is off, that they hold the gasket in place firmly enough that it didnt fall off and i got the cover back on first go !

i put my new one back on with no sealant, as the one i took off did have the blue sealant at the rear half D but it looked like it was the problem as it wasnt even and created a gap for the oil by holding the seal away from its surface , the seal taken off was hard too, so i think its just one of those things that needs replacing if/when it goes hard.

if i find its leaking though, ill take it back off and use sealant.
