    Low range popping out of gear on fender

    Had this problem for awhile and don't know if its me or the gearbox.

    I tend to but the Defender in CDL once in soft sand or offroad loose stuff. I really don't like low unless I'm stuck or stalling, which i tend to do with the Td5 a fair bit.

    Anway when i am stationary and clutch it into low range it tends to 'pop' out of gear (into neutral) once loading it on clutch release. This has been really dangerous on a number of occasions. I have even noticed some times it will be in low and start moving then when strained will pop out of gear.

    Is this a stuffed transfer case or my lack of putting in gear properly. Would love to know anyone with a similar problem or how I can test without pulling apart the transfer case and gearbox.

    I had that problem the first couple of times with mine. Had to ride a couple of hills in neurtral!
    I found it was me not putting it fully into gear. Once you think it is in give a very hard shove and see if you get a clunk as it slots home.

    Same here.......
    My failsafe way is, Drive gear selected, I drop the clutch in, short throw into neutral(in transfer case) then second throw into Low Range and ease off the clutch, once in gear I then further PUSH the Low range leaver till you can feel it Bite In....
    If I don't get that Bite In feel, it has Popped Out on a few inconveniant occations.......
    Helps if a drive gear is preselected, and the truck is slightly rolling, transfer case is then more willing to accept the L/H shift....Remember there is no Synchro on the transfer case in the Fender......Hence the Final push required.........

    Try engaging low or high while rolling slowly & use a firm movement of the lever. The gears need to mesh fully otherwise they will pop out of mesh.

    Ahh thats why I used to have the hassle. With the Auto I have to be in neutral and stationary or you can't get it in and just grind cogs.

    As I teach it to the Ajs learning the 110...

    Stop... put it in first... move the lever into the correct range and hold force on the lever... ease up on the clutch while maintaining force on the lever and move the vehicle at least 10 m then push the clutch in...

    I'm in a Discovery V8, but had the same prob and a while back I posted similar.

    My solution was to remove the covers where the t/case gear lever is and remove the gate plate. I filed it as it was obstructing the movement of the gear stick and have not had a problem since the 'fix', but the stick bangs in to the radio.

    For me, I figured it was no more than a wear issue.

    Doesn't jump of gear anymore.

    Have a look and see what happens, nornalup.

    This is the technique I have adopted with my Rangie and I have never had a selection issue. The LT77 will pop out of 1st gear down steep hills on accasion, so I always hold pressure on the gearstick in those circumstances.

    Thanks guys appreciate the advice.

    Most of you suggest rolling whilst going between low and high. Unfortunately I use high for soft sand driving and if/when I get completly stuck on soft sand or a steep slope I select low, and by nature this means I am not moving, making it really hard to get into low.

    I beach i have been going to a few times a week has a really steep long exist , and when the high tide is in there is bugger all run up on the harder sand. Got with a few metres of the top yesterday and this almighty bang as it came out of gear, scarred the heck out opf me and the dog.

    Normaly The only reason i chose low is that I tend to stall the Td5 fender a fair bit from standing start. Whilst I don't want to blame the vehicle, as i have changed my techncique to reduce this, but it seems to be a turbo lag issue and I have read similar on this forum.

    Mabye I need to got back and read '4wding for dummies'

    Perfect timing, I've experienced this in my County 110 too. I might try the filing idea.
