Delvac 1 is their diesel specific oil. The Euro's have worked out that with the common rail engines and that excellent little centrifuge that a passenger car oil with a CF diesel rating works fine, however if you wanted one of the best diesel specific oils in 5W-40 you will be hard pressed to find something better than Delvac 1, and I'm sure the HPR 5 will deliver very very good results, too.

Ah, so really Delvac1 is the go.

if I had a TD5 it'd be the first oil I'd reach for.
Redline is excellent but 2.5 times the price of D1.
Terry Dyson is an independent oil analyist based in the states who I use and he's had very good results with Royal Purple's diesel oil, but I don't think it's as cheap as D1 here.

The 20 litre drum I bought last month cost me $200/20 litres from the nearest Mobil depot.

Caltex's Delo 400 and Mobil's Delvac MX have excellent reputations if you want a 15W-40 mineral oil for a 300Tdi.

According to the blokes like Terry that I talk to, the gap between mineral and synthetic is narrowing fast and the lines are starting to blur already thanks to the ever tightening industry specs.

According to Mobil here http://www.datateck.com.au/lube/mobil_au/ they recommend Delvac 1 or Delvac MX for my 200Tdi.

So is it safe to use Delvac 1 5W40 in a 200Tdi, or just the Tdi in general?(since I think that they are essentially the same engine anyway, and to benefit all the 300Tdi owners who might be interested)

The recommendation from this site seems very very positive so I'd be interested to try it, provided its safe:D

Just checked the manual, 5W40 is used in Tdi engines for climates between -30 and -10 celsius according to Land Rover.

In other words, totally useless?;)

I have heard that synthetic oils can damage or 'eat away' seals in engines that aren't designed for use with it. The race engines may be designed to run with a synthetic oil with the seal composition in mind.

I use semi-synthetic Penrite HPR15, after my mechanic said that the Magnetec, which is 10W-40, which I have been running for 110,000kms, is a bit light. This is on a 1993 Rangie.

Any one else heard about being selective synthetic oils, before this I always thought the thinner and cleaner the better!

Thats strange. For the TD5 5W-40 is a good oil.

If I can get my scanner to cooperate Ill scan in the page.

The V8 chart says 5W40 is suitable for all temps but the Tdi is only the very narrow band -30 to -10. 5W50 and 10W40 covers the whole band

In RAVE it shows 15w/40 for the -10 to 50+ range for the Diesel Disco's
