    Disco Diagnosis

Travelling to Ace and Mick's recent Stockton beach adventure I was experiencing some unusual steering vibration at above 80kph. A severe tripple wobble about every second or two. Then, after airing down and approaching the beach, I became aware of a loud 'chirping' coming, intermittently, from the front of the vehicle and lastly while shifting from forward to reverse on the sand I was concerned that the 'clunking' was louder than usual. At the last service the front wheel bearings had been inspected/replaced because of signs of water entering the hubs and I was concerned that the service had not been carried out properly and was the cause of my problems.
Finally I bailed from the trip because I was getting paranoid about damage to the CVs, Hub bearings etc.
I've since had the front wheels rebalanced (one wheel was badly out) which seems to have fixed the steering wobble. Checking out the underside of the Disco, prior to taking it back to the mechanics to be diagnosed, revealed some problems with one of the uni's on the front driveshaft. It looks like two of the cups are damaged and alowing a lot of slop and 'clunk' in the uni. (This would explain the loud noises when changing direction).
I'm currently working on dismantling the damaged uni joint and would be grateful for any advice regarding repair/reconstruction.
I'm hoping this is the cause of the chirping as well, but time will tell.
So, step 1 - what parts do I need to repair the uni joint?

A uni joint kit, should run you about $20-30 for greasabel ones... just goto any bearing place, driveline specialist, hell even repco/supercheap and autobahn have trouble screwing this one up.

If it comes apart easy put a little antisieze on the outside of the bearing cups before putting it back together

If its not playing the game coming apart, feel free to butcher the cross bit in the middle as hard as you like so long as you dont bend, score, cut, overheat or otherwise damage the yokes that hold the bearing cups.

Use a g-clamp and some ordinary washers to press the new uni cups into the yokes - you don't knock the needle bearings out unlike when you use a hammer.

    Maybe it's the non-greasable type ?

Looks like it to me, can't see the grease nipple on the elbow

You can see the grease nipple hole on the RH side (above the damaged shaft section).

Yep, it's ugly isn't it? This kind of thing makes me feel so good about paying $90 an hour for professional service.

In that case Dave, take the shaft to the service guy & get him to replace the uni .
And tell him the grease nipple isn't there for decoration while you're at it.
