    Which fluids?

Please excuse my sheer ignorance on this subject but you have to start somewhere I am going to start carrying basic fluids in my '99 manual D2 TD5 but have no idea of what is best for my baby or indeed what is required. She is serviced regularly by a cracking LR machanic but it is about time I learn what goes where. Can anyone suggest which brand/spec of fluids I should be using and carrying in the car for general off road use. Not sure if it has any bearing on choice of fluid, but she is set up predominantly for off road use with maxi rear locker, 4.11's, maxi CV's and 32" muds.

    Can anyone give me brands for the following;

    1. coolant
    2. engine oil
    3. brake fluid
    4. clutch fluid
    5. diff oil
    6. anything else I should think about carrying?

Also, I have Supacheap & Autobarn round the corner so I assume most fluids can be bought there or do I need to go elsewhere?

All help and advice appreciated as I am completely clueless when it comes to this sort of thing........just ask the rest of the guys in our club

    Aye, Mick

ditch the coolant and carry the pellets, use the water you should be carrying to get you out with them..

brake and clutch fluid are one and the same

    you should have gearbox oil/fuild.

just look in your manual (if you dont have one someone in here should be able to get your numbers for ya) and buy what it lists and in the quantities it lists.

If its only for "get me out of trouble" reasons buy the cheapest you can get. if your going to rotate through it as part of your servicing thats a different kettle of fish.

If its just to carry for the "what if" then i'd just take:

5l of engine oil, it'll go in your gearbox or diffs well enough to get you home

Brake/clutch fluid, although any fluid in either of these will get you home, even water

Power steer/auto fluid, but if you've blown a pressure hose on your power steer you won't be fixing it anyway

and thats it, best to take the appropraite tools to repair things and spare radiator hoses to, but try to minimise on crap you carry

Dont use engine oil in Transmissions.... even short term... the detergents are bad news and engine oil does not have the anti frothing agents that Tx oil does. froth the oil and all your nasties get suspended and pushed through everything. if youve cracked the box not so much a problem but if its just cause of a blown seal. IT could be the difference between a $50 seal and a complete rebuild.

5l of tx oil and 5l of engine oil, then use the Tx oil in diffs, brakes everything else but the engine.

Talking manual gearbox, NOT automatic transmission

If it was auto you'd definately take some tranny fluid, but his is manwel

and engne oil was a common manual gearbox lube before specific low visc manual trans lubes came out, eg LT85 in old Rangies. It should be OK for a short while.
Where they really miss out is poor frictional characteristics for best synchro performance, and they shear very quickly in prolonged use.
    A 10W-30 is equivalent to a 75w-80, a 5W-40 would be close to a 75W-90.

actually it applies more so to manuals than autos, autos have pump fed oil that comes through a filter...

if you put engine oil in a manual box the fine metal particals that normally become stuck to the edge and bottom of the box will become suspended in the froth and mixed through everything. Put a magnetic plug on the bottom of your TX next time you change the oil and check it out on the next oil change..

fnurgle me, IF I keep pointing out the good points on the evil grey boxes Im going to convert myself.....
