if its coming from the rear and only when moving it could be wheel bearings or a brake backing sheild only a guess tho you might need some mechanc to help source the cause![]()
Please help somebody.
My 1999 TD5 Defender started to make what I can only call a Rattling scraping sound last night.
It is not a baffle because it only happens when the car is moving, even if rev'd stationary.
Can't see anything hanging or caught up under the car.
Drove the car this morning home from work. Beautiful not a sound. Got about 3 k's up the road and it started again. Putting my foot on the brake makes no difference.
Got onto the Eastern Freeway and sat on a 100kph. Turned off at Bulleen Rd,and it had gone quiet again. Got about 5 k's up the road again and it was back.
I seams to be worse when turning, both ways.
I haven't got a clue where to start. It appears to be coming from the rear.
Any advise or ideas would be appreciated...... Thanks in Advance.. Mal

yep Id agree with that it could also be something inside the backing plate.

If you think you're in front on the deal, pay it forwards.
If it was something behind the backing plate wouldn't it do it first up, when cold?

The vehicle doesn't drive or feel different.
if its something behind the backing plate it will be loose and moving around so could happen at anytime![]()
I think you need to take someone with you on a test ride so they can help isolate the source of the sound. It could be any part of the drivetrain, brake calipers/ shields or hub bearings. Have a good crawl around under the vehicle in good light and check those brake shields and the driveshaft uni's. Check the oil level in your diffs too.
Good luck.![]()
I had a noise like this once in the Pig. A fairly loud rattle was heard (I thought) from the front left corner of the car but when the brakes were applied it went away.
Took a mate for a drive to find out where it was coming from as I'd looked everywhere and couldn't work it out. He said "It's coming from the rear left"
Took the rear left wheel off and low and behold the disc had sheard off from the hub!The brake pad retaining plates had dissapeared and one of the pads had moved into a vertical position and dropped down onto the edge of the disc, worn a groove and eventually worn through the disc.
Part of the pad was still held in the caliper though, so when I pressed the brakes they grabbed the disc and of course the noise dissapeared. When I let off the brakes the disc was rattling around in the caliper and spinning freely on the hub.
Check your brakes.![]()

You could try jacking up each wheel and spinning it by hand. Feel for any vibration, irregularity and listens for sounds. Grab the top and bottom of the wheel and see if there's any movement (bearings). This may help you isolate the source easily.
If it happens when turning, it could be a diff noise, spinning one wheel at a time will help to diagnose that, as it will cause the diff to work.
