    power steering oil renew

    G'day All,
I'm currently driving 97 disco V8 petrol, and would like to change power steering oil (fluid). Apparently is aerated. Can somebody advice how to change power steering oil. Unfortunately I can not find any info in Haynes Service and Repair Manual, and RAVE CD.
    Thanks

if its aerated simply keep adding oil slowly to the resivour with the engine at the lowest idle you can make it do...

to change the oil, drop the bottom hose off of the steering box and wait. then replace the hose and fill. Filling will take an age and may require that you pump it through... to do this most places do it with the engine idling.. personally I disable the engines ability to start (pull the coil supply or wire the shut off on) then turn it over on the starter. you only need 10-15 seconds worth of cranking.

That's why it is aerated - it wasn't topped up.

there is a bleed nipple on the top face of the power steering box.

make sure you fill the power steering oil cannister and then whilst someone slowly turns the steering wheel from side to side you can bleed and replace all the oil if so desired. it is like bleeding the brakes but you dont need to pump the pedal :P

    power steering oil

Thanks for the advice. The box is not leaking, and in the reservoir has plenty of oil. My steering is sometimes behaving as if it has lost power after long straight driving. It is enough to restart the engine and all is fine. This weekend I will follow all your suggestions and the replacing of oil will be the last thing I do. Ill let you know.

could also be the pump. they get end float wear and start to behave a bit like that..... make sure you take the belt off and check the play on the pump pulley.

if the power assist to the steering drops out then comes back on again....it may simply be a loose belt.....

Don't know if it is the same, but on the 80s falcons, to purge the system of air, you turned the wheel full lock in one direction and held it for a couple of seconds then did full lock in the opposite direction and it purged the system. Warning only a couple of seconds at full lock.
Might work on a LR too?

I bled the steering system and hope that it has solved the problem.
    Thanks for help.
