been there, piddler is right here - the holes in a D1 are for 4" type speakers, (remember in 1989 when the D1 was announced, a four way speaker system was a big deal) so given the fullness of time, there are many 4" speakers which will do the job - rears no real worries, fronts - check clearance - e window glass

has anyone ever tried any of the speakers from jaycar.........?
they have their own brand which is very competitve on price to the larger name brands.....
but the quality matches and even exceeds that of some of the larger name brands......
they have some fantastic carbon fibre drivers which pump some really good bass.......
i had a pair of sixes and a pair of twelves in my car and had someone really impressed with the base.....
i was thinking to myself that it just didnt sound quite right....but the other person was telling me how good the bass was.....
then i realized what the problem was......the twelves werent working.....the amp was off......
when i worked out what had happened i was quite impressed myself......
go and see what they carry and have a listen.....you might like their gear.....
and...as for base from a pair of 6x9s.......has anyone had the pleasure of the old (about 15 years ago) jensen 6x9s.......
had all the notes you could ever want from your audio system in either a two or three way 6x9.......
then they disapeared from the market......they are now available again....
but i dont know what they are like....
Dzook! where you been? Haven't seen u in a coons age, bro...
Forgot that one - Jaycar rocks! Good shop, the home of all sorts of good gear, like diodes.......

I tell a lie
I have a pair of the Response 4" two way drivers in SWMBO magna
They are very good for the price
i had some in lurch......but i blew them......the amp had a short in it after a dunking.....
and kept blowing the speakers.....took me two speakers to work out the problem.....
dont instal the amp in the battery box on a fender if its going swimming......
i was lucky it was leaning to the left.....if it was level.....the ecu would have gone the same fate as the amp.......
but the speakers did sound a lot better than the factory ones.......
I'm going to jump in here and upset everyone....
It's a bloody Disco 1. Now if you want perfect sound you're going to have to work on it and spend big, but its only in a vehicle. But if you just want radio and music that is of a reasonable quality then the best thing for a vehicle is a radio head unit that plays MP3 CD-RW's (ad maybe is compatible with an iPod Nano or similar) and the Disco's speakers (unless they're stuffed).
This way you don't wreck your good CD's ('cause you use copies in the car), MP3 at 256kbps (AAC is better) is no big issue in a car and the aftermarket head unit gives you that little amplification kick to drive the speakers at a reasonable level. The iPod Nano or other solid state units have no moving parts (ie disc drive) and so aren't worried by vibration etc. And don't even get me started on CD-changers!
For me hi-fi is a home thing 7.1 140W RMS per channel via monoblock amps through pre-amp into matched B&W 7 series with dipole mid-speakers (for home theatre) and monopole rears and a 14" down throw 150W active sub. Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon, SACD, 5.1![]()

. iPod played through this sounds like crap though!
In the car just a basic radio/cd unit with an iPod and the factory speakers![]()
