Help on A/C in a series I Disco

    Hi all
I have a frustrating question, has anyone had the following problem, I own a 94 disco with the 93 dash in it? my problem is that the A/C fan speed seems to have a mind of it's own. Some times it pumps out heaps of air and other times it barely comes out at all.

The most embarrising part of this is I am a frigy and I am stuffed if I can work out what the problem is or how to fix it.

So two questions: 1 has anyone heard of this problem and if they have do you know of the fault?
2 does anyone know how to pull the fan assembly out?

No there is no one up here in Darwin that can help including landrover agent

    Yours in utter frustration

Suggestion from one ex- Fridgy to another.

Could it be the motor bearings starting to fail, (cools down runs again etc) the speed control or connections loose, burnt, fan wheel clogged with crap etc etc?

I understand that the motor in your model needs the dash dismantling, whereas the D1 motor (my one) can be withdrawn from under the dash.

Good luck, youll need it soon.

Uh oh! another D1 air con issue!

The original dash layout (air/heater functions) in the D1 is apparently a science unknown to anyone. Move the sliders to red and it runs cold, if the aircon is on. Venting is entirely by experience.

If it comes and goes its possible that the sliders aren't connecting properly or are maybe, just maybe expanding and contracting due to heat fromthe current of the 12 volt supply.

If it was me, (I have a D1) I'd disconnect the battery, and get in there with a toothbrush and some methylated spirits and clean everything possible - and let it dry off for a few minutes, then see what happens...

I get the feeling your description may be the classic 'intermittent fault' - which often means poor connections.

(I may be entirely wrong, tho, it may be the rare D1 climate control version, delivered in only one Disco and it's yours!!!! LOL)

good luck blitz and keep us posted

Could be the fan speed control resistor, it could be the bearings as mentioned above, and it is quite likely to be loose/dirty connections also mentioned above.

I have the wiring diagrams for the standard D1, and also the details on RAVE CD again for the standard D1

Or as quiggers said above you could have the climate control - on those the airflow - speed/volume/direction almost has a mind of it's own.

Ok in answer to some of the points above

Fan bearings are fine althought the barrel fans need a good clean

I have stripped the dash out enough to check the slide, it appears to make good contact, but as you said an intermittent fault can metre out fine every time you check it and no good when you use it.

I haven't looked at the resistors in the motor yet, that could be a point.

From the sounds of it I need to pull the dash out to get to it properly.

Now I must admit that was my intention a while back when I pulled the covers off to get to the switches in the centre of the dash, but I couldnt see how to pull the dash down any further with out amonnium nitrate and diesel. Which while momenterialy satisfying would mean walking. As you all sound like you have some of the voo doo knowledge of how to do this - care to share. I promise on the pain of death not to impart this obviously highly secret knowledge on to anyone who owns a Toyota.

Just another point this can happen when I turn on the car first thing in the morning after working fine the afternoon before or notice it driving along and start getting hot?

Landrover were a great help they told me I had a fault in - gee what an amazing diagnosis. I never thought of that. But unfortunately they didn''t know what it was.

Could this be another plot by Lucas just to enfuriate australians?

Of course, blitz, and they're in cahoots with Land Rover. If it really gets beyond you (are you handy with a multimeter?), get an auto electrical bloke to sus it out for you, in my experience, they seem to know more about how cars work (or oherwise) than anyone else.

I'm lucky, our local bloke is an old ex South African. His expereince is with (older) Peugeots, Citroens, Mercedes Benz and.... Land Rovers!!!, and he likes "Landy's", reckons they're much easier than Citroens......

The resistor pack should be pretty easy to get to without removing the dash - so it might be worth checking that before you go the whole hog.

I only have the instructions for the dash panel removal on a later model - 1996 - I can post it here if it would help
