    Replacing the Dead Tacho

    G'day All

As some of you might be aware, whilst fiddling with the instrument cluster the other day I dropped n killed (I think) my 52mm VDO tacho. I went to replace it and discovered that VDO have replaced the model with either a 4000 RPM Version or an 8000 RPM version. My old one is calabrated to 6000 RPM.

Does anyone have a 6000 RPM one they no longer want? Or anyone got any practicle suggestions of what brand with the same range 0-6000 to replace it with?

I'm going to see it the VDO people here in Tassie will repair it for me.

    Cheers

I know some one who will look at it for you!

I have a friend whe has just been laid off by a VDO agent and thats what he does is repair them.

if you strike out down there i can ask him to take a look for you.

I too had the same conundrum when buying one but managed to find a NOS (New Old Stock) one on Ebay for the right price. it is installed and this same friend came over and used an optical tachometer to adjust it so it reads true.

I never rev my 300 TDi above about 3100rpm as it scares me much above that.

So wouldn't the 4000 one be OK?

What is the redline on these motors?

    Dead Tacho

    G'day Zwitter

My RAVE CD says Govenor is set at 4600 RPM I think. I rarely rev mine over 3200 so the 0 - 4000 is an option. Bugger VDO. If I strike out down here I'll PM u n send it up.

    Cheers,

    4600 Rpm!!!!!! !!!!!!

I think my TDi would be raining down in bits way before that!!!

I droveit hard to change lanes today when the taxi had other ideas and the parked car was approaching and took it to 3200 maybe 3300 but it makes a racket and vibration etc i wont be testing the 4600.

See how ya go with VDO.
I will talk to my mate and ask him what might be wrong etc.
How hard did you drop it?

How did this happen Steve?? The sweaty palms associated with the excitement of pulling the dash on the 'fender? or the fact that you are getting closer, ever closer to the tongue swallowing, nosebleed enducing power upgrade I will soon unleash on your unsuspecting Fiona????

Bad luck about the Tach, I guess a 4000 one would be Ok, but I think they must've been developed for the 4BD1.

    Instrument woes

James, Not hard. It fell 400 mm onto the floor of the fender. I've been in touch with the VDO ppl here in Tassie and they say that it is potentialy repairable. If not they may be able to find a 0-6000 version for me.

JC I'll take you up on the power upgrade shortly. I had to just about rewire the entire dash due to some useless individuals crap attempt to install the Tacho in the first place.

Secondly Fiona must have got thirsty at some stage as she's had a cup of capaccino through the back of the instruments.

....could've been a skinny latte? Fiona has undergone a life changing experience and is not hanging out with the 'latte sipping brigade' anymore, she's up to some real work now.......Time to get dirty again!!!(Read MUDDY for those of you with small minds)
