    Battery Management

Installed a second battery (deep cycle) in my Defender. Connected them with a simple solenoid.
Thought it might be good to install a battery monitor/management so that the charging of the second battery is more efficient.

As I have never installed a battery management system so far (only simple solenoids) I would be interested in some of your views. Also if in favour for these mgmt systems I would like to know which ones - there are just too many on the market.

    Thanks for your help.

    Cheers,
    Daniel

One of the chaps here runs a company that does just what you are looking at.

I am sure he'll pick up on the thread.........

    It's late, it's sunday ......and I just can't remember his name .......

    old age creaping in.

What I do remember thought is the systems he has are pretty good and would certainly cover off what you want to do, and it is, apparently, an easy DIY job

TRAXIDE sponsor this site and offer a discount to aulro members. I've fitted a Traxide SC80 to my Defender. It can manage 2 spare batteries at 40amps each. For a few dollars less you can get the SC40 which manages one spare at 40amps. Go to www.traxide.com.au for full technical details.

I've wired a solenoid, so that the traxide actually trips the solenoid to connect the main & aux batteries together (after charging the main). The solenoid has a manual over-ride so I can jump start the main off the aux if I need to.

It cost me around the $120 mark, other stuff on the market was around the $500 mark. It's worked well so far. I had it mounted in the lid of a marine battery box originally so I could use it in the Rangie and the SIII. Then we put it in a Defender for a Simpson trip, where it managed 4 batteries (2 banks of 2) and now it's in my Defender. Dust & vibration haven't caused any problems and the wiring is very easy, have a look at the wiring diagram on the website. It's also very compact and can live in the battery box.

for one battery you only need the SC40.....
if you are fitting two batteries...or plan to have one on a trailer for example....
and wish to charge them...then you should go the SC80.....

Thank you very much ladas, Pedro, Michael2, and Zook. I just love it when I don’t have to do the hard sell, because you guys have done it for me.

Hi Vida, as has been covered above, I make and sell dual battery controllers that work in a different way to the run of the mill controllers. Have a look at my web site www.traxide.com.au for more details and ask away here for anything you need to know about your particular set up and installation requirements.

In most cases, the SC40 will do the job you want in the Defender but post what you are planning to use your dual battery set up for and I’ll take it from there.

    Cheers and thanks again folks.

    Tim.

I'll bite... Ive just perused the site...

IF I have the vehicle off, the primary battery and both aux batts are isolated from each other...

So If I have a solar charging system on the trailer do you have a set up that will let the solar system float the vehicles aux and main batteries if the voltage gets up high enough?

Im thinking it would be something like the SC80 but as I read it its only working things out from an ignition supply voltage and the voltage present on the main battery not the auxs... or have i misread

Hi Dave, the current version does not cater for solar panel charging of the main battery.

The new version which is NOT ready yet, will.

I have been working on a new system for the D3 and RRS and the technology being developed for this unit, will be used in all of the new range of devices.

Again, the new range is still some time off.

    Cheers.
