    pittman arm adjustment

    Hello,

    bought a 4wd mag yesterday that had a free DVD about a Rangie and a Patrol, $2000 cheapie torture test, one of the things they mentioned was sloppy steering in the Rangie, they fixed it by adjusting the Pittman Arm, went on to say it then drove like new, so my questions is...where the bl$$dy hell is it and how do i adjust it?

    I know it's only part of the cause for wobbly steering, but i'd like to give it a shot..

    From 82/83 up the balljoint on the pitman arm was replaceble but not adjustable as such, i think they mean to just retighten the big nut on the end on the sector shaft that holds it on as they tend to come loose.
    A bj kit with new bj/ boot/ seat will help if its chewed out.

    is there an adjustment in the top of the steering box for free play in the steering??? or is this just with non power steering models

    I was going to ask the same thing as weeds, on my disco there is an allen key bit on the top of the shaft, which is accessible ontop of the steering box that can adjust the wheel that contacts with the worm inside the steering box, this can be moxed in or out depending on what is needed. Matt

    Yes, there is an adjustment on the top, but it does not take up all the free play in the box, and you must be very careful not to end up with it tight in any part of the travel. Best done with both front wheels off the ground and engine stopped, and test it for stiffness through the whole range from lock to lock after locking the adjustment. Too tight will not improve the steering feel and will shorten the box life.

    Pitman arm connects to the steering box.
    Idler arm is the corresponding arm on the non driver side.
