    Exhaust manifold

Looks like I have the warped exhaust manifold problem. Nice whistling noise on acceleration, lack of boost, running a bit warm.....

I'm gradually working through the list of Td5 gremlins.

Welcome to the world of TD5's

Do your self a favour and replace all studs, not just the broken one and get the manifold checked to see that it is not warped

Also elongate the end 2 stud holes in the manifold while its off. This should help stop it happening in the future.

Intercooler wont bend manifold, his ECU is stock too... Its just a fault that can occur... The stud comes loose or breaks and the manifold moves.

    Mine went but didnt warp......

    BTW.... Frenchie... Wheres the ECU

ECU is currently a Bruce Davis mod. The head gasket was done recently should have thought to get the manifold checked at the same time.

Hadn't driven the vehicle for a few weeks due to being away, Rich fitted the intercooler while I was away and I'm sure it has made a difference but I'm losing a lot of boost on anything more than moderate acceleration so I can't test it out properly.

Mike, when the RAAF go off for Xmas stand down in three weeks time I won't be dependent on the vehicle to get to work so I'll post it over then if that's ok.

Andrew I'm amazed how many people have spotted that pic!

So guys... another newbie question... hopefully relavent to this thread... what exactly are the symptoms of the manifold stud problem? i noticed the other day a whistle coming from what i thought was the turbo... although i dont seem to of noticed a drop in performance i dont think... any truely visible signs of a problem if i look under the hood?

    thanks

Yes, your turbo will whistle softly in normal use, but when you have a broken stud, it will whilst loudly for a short period of time whilst under load, such as when taking off.

Mine always did it when the manifold was cooler such as after idling at stop lights or when starting car for first time and giving it a rev etc
