    t-case rear output seal

i have had two attempts over the last few months ans its now leaking for the third tiime

there was no groove so no speedi sleeve was require

i put a sealant on the spline

replaced the handbrake shoes, hope they are not buggered again

any tips for my third attempt, looking like it could have been cheaper for somebody else to do

is there any movement in the shaft which may not be spinning true and pushing the seal........?

or a blocked breather allowing pressure to build up........

also.....is the oil level in the transfer case correct.....?

Just burn the oil out of the shoes. Metal tray some metho and a match will get them back to servicable.

    I'll second Defendezook's comments.

    Likely problems are :-

    1. Blocked breather

    2. Loose bearings on output shaft

    3. Seal either damaged on installation or installed the wrong way round or wrong depth. Seal should be greased to provide initial lubrication and avoid damage when the flange is installed

    Hope this helps

vasaline on assembly and lots of it...

you might want to try going to a different style of seal...

you can get double lips and you can get double steel edge...

the second ones are an absolute pain in the ass to install and cost a motza but have a rubber backed metal face on the inside and outside with a oring plated in the middle...On the plus side If you get em in right they almost never fail.

I'll get some names of em from work they might even have the size listing for a rover.

Rubber grease should work, but ordinary grease or vaseline would be better.
Looking at the book, it would seem that any play on the output shaft means the transfer case needs overhauling.

Have a look at my previous thread

    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/showthread.php't=28150

Try a different supplier for the seal. It took a couple of tries for me to get it right too (Both on a LT 95 4 speed and a LT230). If you don't want to burn the shoes clean, carby cleaner works as well.
