.....the air would be blue!![]()
Half way home today, lift my foot off the accelerator and scarily I just kept accelerating.......hit the clutch and she started revving her tits off.....turned the key off no effect......swerved to the side of the road and stalled it, luckily it stopped.Lots of white smoke.
Phoned Kev at Rovertech who initially thought throttle pot and said to try starting it again....got it going but running really rough, lots of smoke and some horrible rattly sounds.
Now on its way to Rovertech on a tilt tray.
Not happy Jan.![]()

What kind of smoke, white, blue or black...
A failed tps would normally result in no throttle or limping revs only.....
So back to the mechanically injected turbo diesel theories
white smoke is over injection into low compression and your getting unburnt fuel which if the engine was running hard would give you a runaway when you took the load off
Blue smoke is burning oil and I would suspect a failure of the impeller side seal failure in the turbo this will give you a run away as the engine will burn its lube oil which is coming in from the inlet manifold after being atomised by the spraying of the oil of the impeller. It will also be accompanied by an ungodly knock as the combustion will be starting earlier than the injection essentially its pinging.
black smoke is poor combustion usually due to poor injection pattern this is clogged injectors or a drippy nozzle.. and can cause a runaway but usually wont smoke after its gotten up to speed.

what if its blown a seal in the turbo or somewhere........and its running on its own sump oil.....?
the throttle would have no control over this......
I've installed a (red) kill button on my D2 to cater for this. It closes the throttle valve that's normally part of the EGR system. It operates even with the ignition off.Originally Posted by DEFENDERZOOK
I'm not sure whether the smoke was white or blue, definitely not black though. There was certainly a bad knocking when I got it started again but I didn't listen for too long. Should find out today......
I'm kinda hoping it is the turbo because that is (at least partially) covered by my warranty.
If its dieseling on engine oil, your lucky its a manual so you could stall it![]()
I've heard of this happening to an auto tdi where the engine reved its tits off until it ran out of oil, then made a horrible and expensive banging sound![]()
The lady driver didn't think to cover the air intake to stop it, and I'm not sure I'd be game to get close to the engine at that point either!
Good luck with it.
Bruce.
I put a second hand fuel pump onto a diesel Maverick for a friend and found out when I started it that it was jammed at wide open throttle. I ended up pulling the fuel line into the pump off (didn't undo the clamp, just reefed it off). Turning the key off made no difference whatsoever.
It scared the crap out of me when it happened, visions of rods coming out the side of the block...
Hi!. Doesn't sound good. Hope they sort out what's up with it asap.
This scenario brings back bad memories - my 05 Defender did a similar thing to me earlier this year. The car didn't even have 2,500 on the clock. [sounds sad but i only got it in June - ex. showroom model, and i drive it as my 2nd vehicle)
I was driving at 100km/h and heard a higher pitch noise start up - at the same time i lost all acceleration and noticed whitish smoke at the rear of my vehicle - but the noise/rev of the engine went to absolute maximum. I pulled over and paniced - from my emmory i ran from the vehicle because i actually thought it would blow. The smoke was black (not sure if it was blue) and white all at once and was absolutely pouring out of my exhaust. There was NO WAY to cut the engine! - i had no idea that i had to stall it to stop it (sure do know this now, though!). Anyway - i thought that was the end of my new car, right then and there. A guy stopped and stalled it - almost 10 minutes of revving the crap out of it. It was such a sad thing to watch - especially because i couldn't stop it.
It ended up that the Turbo had deteriorated from the inside - something to do with a fan in the turbo, the propellar shaft (or something- sorry) had failed and then the rest of the turbo (which is supported by the fan system) then failed.
The service manger at Artarmon told me that the smoke was the oil and air burning. He told me that there were 2 things the dielsel engine can run off - 1. diesel 2. oil and air. I was pushing them to do a compression test, but he did convince me that this was unnecessary - hmmmm. Anyway all seems ok, i was just REALLY concerned about what the revving for almost 10 mins did to the rest of the engine.
Anyway, just FYI. (I didn't lose control over accelleration)
Has anyone else heard of any very new defenders having turbo issues like this i wonder?
Keep us posted with what caused your troubles. Good luck
