    How early a Disco S1?
If before 92 then it will have a white metal bearing in the bottom, and wear in this is what causes seal failure.
I have rebuilt an 81 Rangie box myself, but it entailed honing the bottom bearing for about 6 hours with a brake cylinder honing stone,as I didn't have a parallel cutter.
As long as the sector shaft is unmarked this will go for years.Or of course you can have it rebuilt with tapered bearings at a price.(exhorbitant???)

If after 92 and it has tapered bearings, I would replace the bearings to be sure it doesn't leak again in six months , as it is all a bitch of a job.

    Lucas Stop Leak

Took the easy option and bought two bottles of Lucas Steering Stop Leak for $17 each... could only drain enough fluid from the Steering bottle for only one.

Took it for a run and it has stopped leaking completely, bone dry... for a relatively small outlay, it works a treat... for how long don't know...

Question... why haven't power steering fluids got this stuff in it in the first place?

Might get the tranny stuff as theres weeping at the gaskets next time I am at Supercheap.

Great stuff highly recommend it... I know it's only been a week.... thanks everyone for their input.

Mines's been leaking for the last 5 years.
If the steering box is nice & clean, it drips on my driveway. A bit of dirt road driving fixes it - the dust soaks up the drips & even slows down the leak.

I have used an old Battery Hydrometer (after taking out the guts) for removing coolant. Alternatively, you could use your wife's basting tool. Similar to the Hydrometer.

Used a battery hydrometer myself, the alternative could be harmful to ones health.

    Especially after Sunday's roast.

I have just checked in the shed, & I see I used Slick 50 Power Steering Fluid a couple of years ago. All still seems fine at 100,000km.

Had the same probs for many years, which I've mentioned before.

Take it easy on the steering, drive it like there is no power assistance and it will stop leaking - I refer to it as the Land Rover self healing steering.

It seems that this is the one actual fault in LRs (v8s not diesels)

and given I've been thru this for some time - I let the whole thing warm up for about 3 minutes before going anywhere. The cold seal may be incidental to an overall warming up, but mine doesn't leak at all if i let it run up before taking off.

So, I've yet to do the job, as I take it easy with it, just a thought for operation.

Because if you actually need power assistance for your steering, you're creating stress on the system, so avoid the stress....

(apart from the steering box and old cooling system hoses, my D1 V8 has been mighty fine), now can LR make me a new one just like this, if they did i'd shell out the $ for it...I'd just like a 'new' D1 (with a nice V8).
