I want to share symptoms of a transmission problem with the unwashed masses of the AULRO forum

04 TD5 Town Spec DII went into Pacific Landrover Maroochydore with two apparently related symptoms. First there was a pronounced "shudder" when the transmission went into lockup at around 80-85 kph. Second, under acceleration the transmission appeared to "grab", like one of the bands inside the box forgot what it was supposed to do.

On only one occasion, I got a tranmission error indicated on the console (the "M" and "S" symbols flashing in sync). But only once, and the "grab" symptom was happening at its worst, 5 or 6 times in my daily commute down (and up) the Landsborough - Maleny hill. Overall, appeared and steadily got worse over a 5 day period.

Paul at Pacific nailed the first problem straight away. Apparently a torque converter problem, uncommon but known. Replaced under warranty. The "grab" problem took a second visit and was traced back to a faulty "driver demand sensor" which is LR speak for the electrical thingy that senses weight of foot on accelerator. The engine ECU senses (and logs) the error, the engine hesitates, the gearbox ECU complains, and the net result gives the "grab" symptom.

So the problems were ultimately unrelated. Kudos to Pacific LR for figuring it all out, and for replacing said faulty items under warranty.

Hope this helps anyone with one or both of the same problems.
