How big is a drop of oil? That is like saying 1/10th of the length of a piece of string...

Assuming the engine burns 10l/100km, that is 2L per cylinder per 100km. So if one injector was dribbling diesel, that could make the difference.

One drop of oil is 1/10th of a ml (supposedly) and one ring, passing 1/10th of a drop will burn 1l(ish) per 100km, but thats the quote from my eng 3 book for oil leaking up past rings.

the easy way to check the seals on the top of the injectors where they seat is by adding some oil dyemark to the diesel and run the engine with the cover off, ensure the oil is clean (change it if you have to) and you will see it change colour around the injector with the leaking seal.

The volume of a droplet of oil is by no means a constant number - it changes with viscosity, surface tension, density, interfacial tension, surface roughness and surface geometry. I would throw out that book if you still have it...

At least we found the source of the noise - one of the nuts on the turbo housing mounting had fallen off, so gas was escaping past the gasket.

I would be seriously worrying about your mechanic if he didn't notice that the first time...

Sorry to hear about your troubles Frenchie. Good luck with it.

I have always been a bloke who leaned towards science but owning English cars over the years has forced me to acknowledge the mystical powers at play in car ownership. You were talking about your next vehicle and somewhere in the cosmos a mystical force said "b0ll0cks to that, mate...".
