    Auto confusion

    Have read many posts on auto’s but just can’t seem to find an answer, so here goes ;

I have a late 1981 Classic Range Rover with a three(3) speed auto which I have identified as using a Ford C4 3 speed auto. I believe that the transfer case is an LT230T. The centre diff lock is engaged with a vacuum switch. I have been told 81 models did not have automatics.

I have also seen 1984 Classic Range Rover with a three(3) speed auto which I have not been able to identify with what I believe is a LT230R transfer case with a high low centre diff locking lever. (no vacuum actuator)

Q1. Does anyone know what the auto is in the 1984 model ?
Q2. Does anyone know which system is the better ?

C4 is an ford box - ie: a conversion. Good strong simple box.

I'm sure your answer really helped him blknight

IF, IF you've identified your auto correctly as a C4 (C9) it will have an LT95 transfer case, this is the case used with the early 4 speed, but they cut the ****er off and stick on the ford transmission, Ritters did that.

1981's did not come with automatic from factory

The 1984 would be fitted from factory with a Torqueflite TF727, its a chrysler transmission and its a big tough ****er, most idiots will tell you these are **** and suck the guts out of the poor little crapbox 3.5, but they don't realise the transfer cases with these are fitted with 1.003:1 high range and all the later ZF's have 1.22:1 which makes for the greater feeling of punch.

The later is better, the clutch packs from inside the ford literally fit inside the packs from the chrysler, its argumentable that the LT230R is a better transfer case, the LT230T definately is but not so the R version

    Hi Mangie
Ive heard the common conversion for these was actually the Ford BW35 auto, not the C4.
The BW35 and C4 are different, the BW35 has quite a large square oilpan, the C4 a smaller deeper one.The C4 is the better(much stronger) of the 2.A search for BW35 and C4 automatics on google should get you a pic to help the identification.
I dont think my Falcoon workshop manual was returned by the last borrower so I cant get the identification info.

It could also be a Turbo 400, Ritters did these aswell. More than likely the Torqueflyte.

    ok I'll play nice...

If he can get me some pics when i duck into work to sign some paperwork, I'll pass em to the auto guru and ask him nice to identify them. (tuesday)

but i will back rovercare in his choice of atx an tcases

Ive contemplated building a mudder a few times and my choices would have been...

a carbied 3.9 pushing the torqueflight on an lt230t into 4.7:1 diffs with say 35 inch rubber

IMHO these are about as tough as stockish rover gear gets.
