yes rangieman me and an auto, As much as I despise them day to day, in special applications they have their place, mud and sand are 2 of them. (it was a competition vehicle I was looking at building)

however, as soon as you mention the words reliability and field repairability IMHO AFAIC you can unclick the auto check box...

and Yes I will take the annoyance of having to get micky mouse gearshifts in a manual on dirt/mud/technical stuff over the ease of drivabilty in an auto...

Just wait till i get started into hrydrostatic transmissions instead of auto's now theres a whole new kettle of fish.

Mining, construction, and earthmoving equipment have not had manual transmissions for at least 40 years. They went to automatic and powershift transmissions with a torque converter starting during and after WW2. Far more efficient and operator friendly for doing it in the dirt. Torque converter design is practically an engineering discipline of its own. Fixed or rotating housing, two or three element, fixed or variable pitch stator, slip or lock-up, variable or fixed stall. Terex make a mechanical drive 240 ton rear dump with an Allison auto. handling 2500bhp.

    Thumbs up

Well, most entertaining and informative. I did read many postings relating to auto’s versus manual and didn’t want to go near that topic, alas it found it’s way in.

I have positively identified one auto as a C4 as mine is currently being rebuilt/repaired/massaged back together and with the LT95 transfer case which is the same case as a 1978 4 speed in the back yard. I have also replaced two(2) gears in the LT95 which change the high range ratio’s to give less r.p.m, can not remember the specs.

And I believe that rovecare has nailed the complete mystery that was in front of me.

It appears that all the setup’s aint too bad.

I have to agree that the 3.5L works pretty hard to drive the auto and changed ratios in the transfer case but this is balanced out by a subtle 5 psi of boost.
