There are actually about a dozen different speedos fitted to Series 2, 2a and 3, but they are all more or less interchangeable. Key differences are as follows.
1. Series 1,2,2a have a different cable connection to S3 at the speedo end - other end is the same so you just have to fit a S3 cable if fitting a S3 speedo to a S2a. If there is a trip ion the S3 speedo you may have a problem arranging the adjuster for it - the cable is longer and not interchangeable.
2. lwb and swb speedos are set for different tyre sizes - lwb is fine on an 88 if you have 7.50 tyres, which you most likely do anyway.
3. When they changed to negative earth in about 1967 (same time as ignition/start switch) the warning lights went into the speedo - no problem putting a later speedo in an earlier model unless you are a stickler for perfection, but a problem going the other way (but not with the speedo itself).
4. Stage 1 speedo is unsuitable for any other Series Land Rover as the diff ratio was different.
5. Other differences are :- sixes had a different maximum speed, metric or miles, trip or no trip, and probably a few other differences I can't think of, but none of them are likely to be a problem.
If the problem is only the glass, these speedos can be easily disassembled - the bezel rotates about a tenth of a turn and lifts off.
My S2a is happily travelling round with a late S3 metric speedo, so I have been there!
